One of the domestic-y rituals we've fallen into is making smoothies for breakfast every morning before work. It's kind of the perfect breakfast: you throw a bunch of shit into a blender, blend it for about 30 seconds, then sip on the results while you're getting dressed / drying hair / doing makeup / whatever. That is weird! I actually like getting the little clementine boxes, it's sort of part of the charm. I leave them in the box and cut a hole in the mesh and just pick them out one at a time, usually. If this had happened to me, I would've sort of wanted to complain/object, but how do you even respond to something like that?

I wonder if they reuse the boxes? That would make sense of it, though it still wouldn't make it any less abrupt...

I just LOVE that clementine box... you're right, it IS part of the charm in buying them. I'd like to think that I would react rationally, but let's be frank... I probably would've yelled at her right away & broken my effort to stop cursing.

Perhaps they don't trust people to recycle. If I worked in retail I'd start opening everyone's boxes and sending them home with the bare item, because seeing all that cardboard in our dumpster is infuriating.
