What a grueling afternoon! I had written about 3/4 of my last final when a MOTHER saw fit to deliver her reluctant reader seventh grader. He proceeded to give me a THREE HOUR mis-account of the book he’d supposedly just finished. He sat there and read most of it in front of me, exclaiming, “Ah, so that’s what really happened.” He untangled about 7/8 of the story. Mom came up for him, yelling her head off, as usual.
I am FURIOUS - not at the kid, as mother enables that type of behavior with every piece of his homework she ghosts and sends him off to school with - but at HER for blaming the school that her son can’t read when she’s doing everything possible to be sure he never learns! I told him he’s old enough to do it himself, and if he doesn’t start doing so NOW, he’ll graduate illiterate and not be able to hold down a good job. I think I scared him. He asked about the words he didn’t know, and truly read -- with NO witnesses in the room, of course. I’m sure Monday first hour will see him back to flirting and sluffing, as per normal.
