I have been reading about Pierre Hermé macarons for months now, people rave about them, but I didn't quite understand just why they could engender so much passion in people. Now I do. I think that my taste buds have been ruined for anyone else's macarons EVER AGAIN.

I love precision engineering, thank you Porsche museum!
Yesterday was either an exciting CAR! excursion (if you love beautiful cars) or an exciting precision engineering excursion (if like me you appreciate fast cars more from the point of view of 'OMG great design' rather than the car-like properties themselves.
The Porsche Museum is in Stuttgart, right next to one of the Porsche factories.

Made me look - Japan food (subtitle: I should have bought the Wasabi Kit Kat)
Fish and nuts, wasabi flavoured kit kat, little itty bitty dried red crabs (shells included) ... all things that you can buy in packets at Tokyo Narita Airport...

I love the beautiful Austrian manners so much. The welcome letter at the hotel starts "It is a personal delight and even more of an honour to welcome you to the Hotel...". Wow. I don't think that any other hotel has made me feel quite this special ( Read more... ) -

Verdi should have done nanowrimo
I saw Rigoletto on Saturday. Verdi should have done nanowrimo - he was good at plotting, moved everything along at a cracking pace with perfect timing. I didn't like his characters though... even when he tried to throw in some sympathetic backstory it still didn't work for me, alas ( Read more... ) -

It was lovely catching up with folks and meeting some new ones at nanowrimo drinkies yesterday. I am still amazed at some of the story ideas people come up with (I'm looking at you mrben!). I also received some expert programming advice from Frezned for Barreldragon's epic zork recreation which was a complete bonus.

How great is Steven Moffat?
I love watching TV written by Steven Moffat. His Dr Who episode Blink was the first time I've been frightened by that show since I was about ten years old. For me it was seriously, blanket-cocooningly terrifying and he managed that without one single bit of violence or blood. Such a good writer.
