The Cradle Robber -- My Old Man -- Fashion King -- Understanding

As Long As I'm With You

People tends to think that as the (much) younger one in the relationship, he should have no worry nor fear, because everybody who knows them as a couple can see just how much Yunho cared about him and spoiled him rotten.

It’s Yunho who kept having insecurities as the (much) older one. He’s been living by himself for a long time before Jajeoong came along with all his excess baggage of big family and noisy cousins whom he have considered his own brothers by now.

It’s Yunho who thinks that he’s not good enough, that he’s not updated enough, that he’s not enough fun to be with and struggling to learn the way the ‘youngsters’ have fun and let loose without looking like a party pooper.

Little did they know that after almost 5 years into the relationship (and 4 years of living together), Jaejoong has built his own wall of fear and insecurities. And the biggest one is losing this little think he called home and someone he called his own little family.

It started with some simple words, ‘I wonder how it feels to have a little kid like Taemin around,’ followed by a laughter as Yunho watched his friend Jimin ran after her son whose face was already a mess of chocolate and whipped cream; a result of being left out for a minute alone with his birthday cake.

Jaejoong knew that Yunho had this fatherly side in him from the way he took care of Junsu and also his bratty cousins Yoochun and Changmin. But he just smiled and brushed aside this tingling fear in him. Yunho was and has always been gay, he knew that a son of his own was not an option from the day he came out to his parents many years ago.

And yet, Jaejoong couldn’t forget the gentle smile on Yunho’s face as he moved forward and caught Taemin much to Jimin’s relief.

He almost forgot about Taemin until it’s time for Junsu and Yoochun’s graduation. His and Junsu’s mother couldn’t come and Junsu begged him to attend their graduation even though Yoochun’s parents had told them they would come to the graduation.

“But Hyung, Aunty and Uncle are Yoochun’s parents! Umma can’t come, won’t you at least come, pleaaaseee!”

Jaejoong was a bit annoyed with the request because as much as he knew how important is the graduation for Junsu he also knew that Yunho had been exhausted with the National Championship coming up in just another 2 months.

“Junsu, I will come so stop whining, Yunho is tired!”

“But Hyuuuung…”

“No but. I’m coming and that’s the end of discussion.”

Junsu pouted and Yunho chuckled. That was, until Junsu mumbled something a bit louder for them to hear, but not clear enough to comprehend.

“What was that?” Yunho asked him.

“I said it’s not the same…” And he sounded sad that Jaejoong just had to stop cleaning up the table and asked him again.

“What’s not the same?”

Junsu seemed to hesitate in answering him and Jaejoong got impatient. “Say it or don’t say it at all!”

Yunho’s hand in his arm stopped him for saying more. He just gave him the look that says ‘I’ll handle this.’

When they have finished cleaning up the dining table and dishes, they settled in the living room. Junsu was staying over since it’s Friday. He stayed with them every weekend.

“So Junsu, why did you insist for me to attend your graduation again?” Yunho gently asked him. “I don’t mind to come actually, but don’t you have too many people coming already? Jaejoong will come and so will Yoochun’s parents.”

Junsu kept staring at the TV even though it’s not turned on.

“Because it’s not the same.” He said slowly. Like he’s afraid to say the wrong thing.

Jaejoong almost said something but Yunho squeezed his hand. “What’s not the same?”

Junsu sighed, “Everyone’s parents are coming. But Umma can’t come and… and Appa…” his lips started trembling and Jaejoong knew what’s the big deal is about.

Their father had died when Junsu was in 4th grade. Their mother had been attending his elementary and secondary school graduation. But high school graduation is in a whole different level. It’s the beginning of adulthood. And their mother just can’t make it this time.

“Junsu…” he wanted to say something but he couldn’t. After all, his mother attended all of his graduation.” “You know that this is not something that I can change. I’m sorry that Umma cannot come but what’s Yunho gotta do with it? Why does he has to come in Umma’s place? Am I not enough?”

“No!” Junsu retorted and frowned. “I didn’t say that you’re not enough… it’s just… just…”

“Just what? You know you can tell me anything.” Yunho reached out and held out his hand.

“You’re… you’re older than Jae-hyung. And since the first time we met, you treated me like family.” Yunho squeezed his hand, encouraged him to speak out his mind. “Sometimes I feel like maybe this is what it feels like to have a father when I grow up.” He looked up at him.

“You scolded me when I was wrong or made trouble with Yoochun and Changmin. You listened to my problems and although we didn’t live together you always asked me how I was doing with school. Just like Uncle did. Jae-hyung has been taking care of me a lot because Umma is not living with us, even after he moved in with you I feel like Umma is around because he’s always there for me. I feel like we’re a complete family with you around too.” Junsu looked relieved after saying all that though Jaejoong was rendered speechless.

Yunho smiled and pulled him for a hug.

“You know, I have been living by myself for many years before I met you and Jaejoong. It should be me who thank you for considering me as your own family. Thank you Junsu. I will make sure to attend your graduation.”

Junsu’s smile was something that Jaejoong couldn’t forget for the rest of his life.

In the end they both came along with Yoochun’s parents. And the fear nagged him again as they were watching Junsu taking pictures with their friends and teachers, Yunho told him, “I understand Junsu more now. I’m glad I come today. Maybe this is how it feels like to see your Son growing up.”

~ o ~ o ~
Yunho saw a change in Jaejoong ever since they attended Junsu’s graduation. Upon Junsu’s request, he’s been staying with them for a couple of months before University started. Thus, Yoochun and Changmin’s frequent visit to their place as well. Whether just to ‘play’ or have meals together or just to complain that their parents were not as fun as Jaejoong and Yunho.

Whenever he interacted with Junsu, Jaejoong became silent and watched them carefully. Yunho was sure that it’s not jealousy, but there’s something else in his eyes. Uncertainty. And that’s something that he rarely saw in him.

So in a rare occasion that he’s not coaching and the boys were not around, planned to enjoy the moment and spoil Jaejoong.

He woke up early, showered and prepared a little feast to bring to the park. He wanted to take Jaejoong for a relaxing time since the weather forecast said it’s going to be a little sunny, a perfect weather for a picnic.

Jaejoong was surprised but he seemed happy as they walked hand in hand. They dropped by the bakery for his favorite pastry.

They found a good spot under the shade, and spent the time just talking about anything and everything, laughed as they watched a guy being dragged by his large dog, or catching a ball that accidentally fell on their spot. They enjoyed their lunch (Yunho’s pasta is superb) and coffee and finally just laid on the mat side by side, enjoying the breeze.

It wasn’t until Yunho got up when he heard a boy crying being left out by his brother and friends. Apparently he fell and scrapped his elbow so Yunho quickly ran to him and brought him to their place to clean his wounds. The boy stopped crying after Yunho fed him with the pastry they bought this morning and his mother finally came to pick him up.

“Really, thank you for taking care of him.” She bowed to him and smiled.

“Nah, it’s not a big deal. He’s a good boy, he didn’t cry when I cleaned up his wound, right buddy?” He high-fived the kid who was now smiling widely.

“Uncle gave me chocolate bread and juice.” The boy shyly told his mother.

Yunho laughed when she thanked him again and left with “Thanks again, I’m sure you will be a good father.” after he told her that he’s not married when she told him that he must’ve kids since he’s so good in handling his crying son.

And when Yunho returned to their spot, he saw ‘that look’ again in Jaejoong’s face. He just replied with a hum of his conversation with the boy’s mother. And Yunho’s finally couldn’t stand it anymore and just shot the question that’s been bugging him for a while.

“Jae, what’s bothering you? You haven’t been yourself lately.”

“Hm?” Jaejoong just raised his eyebrow, “Nothing. I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not fine and I hope you realize by now that you can tell me anything.” He turned to face him. “Look at me please. And tell me what’s on your mind. I don’t live with you for 4 years and not recognizing the look when something’s wrong. Please, tell me.”

Jeajoong looked into his eyes and saw the sincerity and love in them. He knew he couldn’t escape this. Not any longer. So he took a deep breath and started.

“Are you happy being with me? Really really happy?”

Yunho was confused but he replied to him anyway. “Of course I’m happy. I’m really really really happy.”

“Are you sure? Even though we’re can’t be a complete family like Junsu wanted us to be?”

“Yes I’m sure! Why are you - oh!” realization dawned on him, he knew where this conversation was going. Now he really looked into his eyes and saw it there. Saw the not only the uncertainty, but also fear. So took both of his hands and held them tight in his as his as he asked him gently, “Jae, what made you think that way?”

Jae avoided to look at him and stared at their entwined hands instead. “I’m not sure. It’s just… you’re much older than me and I’m sure you must’ve been thinking about having a real family. Children.”

“Jae, I know you know that I’ve always been gay and I could never get married and have children on my own.”

“I know! I know that but…” he sighed. “Sometimes you said things that made me think that maybe, maybe you’re not happy enough, and maybe you want more, maybe you w-“

“Jae, stop it and look at me! Look at me… please…” he pleaded and Jaejoong raised his eyes. “I never regretted a thing. What we have right now, I couldn’t ask for more. This is enough for me! This is all I’ve ever wanted and dreamed of.”

“But you kept wondering what it feels like to have Taemin around, or how you’re looking forward to see Hee Jin grow up when she was born and when Junsu -“

Yunho stopped him by putting is finger on Jaejoong’s lips. “No more. I understand Jae, I understand.”

And Jaejoong finally cried cause he saw that Yunho really understood. And he couldn’t deny the love that filled him up as Yunho wrapped his hand around him with gentleness.

“I’m sorry that I have made you feel that way for such a long time. I’m sorry for not realizing soon that I have made you worry for so long. But I never regret this, us, not for one second, not even in a blink of an eye.”

He pulled off and wiped the remnant of tears from his lover’s eyes. He should’ve watched his words and actions. Jaejoong is an observant person and tend to overthink everything, Yunho should’ve known better than to say things that made Jaejoong doubt their relationship.

Yunho moved to lean on the tree and pulled Jaejoong next to him.

“I won’t lie to you and say that I never think about children. But I know what I am and I know what to expect from our relationship. Having children is good, great even and yes, there were times when I was younger when I dreamed of what you call a ‘complete family’, Jae. But that was long before I met you.

“I was living in loneliness before we got together. But you’re the one who gave me a family. You came along unexpectedly, bringing Junsu, Yoochun and Changmin into my once dull life. Your mother loves me like his own, your Uncles and Aunts treated me equally and your cousins looked up to me like their own older brother.”

He chuckled and continued, “I wasn’t longing for my own kid when I looked at Taemin, I already knew how it felt when I took care of Junsu and your cousins. So yeah, that’s what I meant with what I said at Junsu’s graduation.”

Yunho kissed Jaejoong’s palm and told him what he’d been wanting to say during all the years that they were together, “It’s you who fulfilled my dream of a complete family Jae, and no one else. As cheesy as it may sound, as long as I’m with you, I don’t need anything else. I am complete.”

And he sealed it with a lingering kiss, chasing all the insecurities and fear as far away as possible.

And Jaejoong’s world had turned sunny again like the weather on that day. Bright, blinding, and Yunho has never felt like he wants to love someone as much as he wants to give his life for Jaejoong.

They finally finished unloaded Junsu’s boxes to his new apartment that he shares with Yoochun since they got into the same University. It’s a bit far from where Jaejoong and Yunho lived but just a five minute walk from their campus. Changmin felt so left out since he has another year in high school to finish.

“I will come often, Hyung. Just make sure that your fridge is always full.” He pouted as he hugged Junsu before Yunho and Jaejoong took him back home.

“Huh! As I will give you a key to this place! I won’t have you ransacked our place when we’re not around, kiddo.” Yoochun teased him.

“Junsu-hyung love me, he will give me a key, right hyung?” He grinned devilishly at Junsu who just shrugged and ruffled his hair.

“We’ll see about it.”

“Hyuuuuuungggg…” he whined some more.

Everyone just laughed at him and Yunho finally said it’s time for them to leave. As he hugged Junsu and Yoochun once again, he stepped outside and pulled Changmin out too as he seemed reluctant to leave.

“Let us know if you need anyting, kay.” Yunho told them again.

“We will Hyung. Thanks for helping us.”

“Make sure that you have enough sleep and have regular meal.” Jaejoong added. After all, this would be the first time that Junsu would live alone. Well, with Yoochun, but considering that the boy was even sloppier than his brother, he didn’t count.

“Yes, Umma!” Junsu and Yoochun replied in unison.

Yunho laughed and Jaejoong just rolled his eyes.

When they finally left and dropped Changmin off, he told Yunho, “Really hyung, I think the landlady really believed me when I said that you’re Junsu-hyung’s Dad. She told me that you must’ve married so young to have a grown up kid already.”

Yunho kept thinking about it even when they got home.

And as they were getting ready for bed he finally asked Jaejoong, “Jae, do I really look that old that people believed Junsu is my son?”

Jaejoong looked at him long and hard, “Don’t worry about it, you’re and old man indeed but you’re MY old man.”

“Jaeeeeeeee,”

“No, really Yunho, don’t think about it. Old man or not, I still love you. Like you said in the park, as long as I’m with you I’m complete. And that’s what I feel.”

“Really?”

There’s a twinkle in Jaejoong’s eyes as he told him, “Really. I’m complete because I have a lover, a brother… and a father in you.”

“Jaeeeeeee,”

And Jung Yunho decided that he’s the lover tonight. Physically.

A/N: Sooooo I have a week long holiday and suddenly I'm inspired after my friend gave birth to a baby boy a few days ago while another friend had been trying for years to have children but haven't been succesfull yet :( Some people bear children easily, some struggled to have one and yet many abandoned their own. I wish happiness and a bright future to all the children in the world!
