It {一途}
His style of doing things is to proceed according to his everyday experiences and wholehearted thoughts. On Ninomiya Kazunari's course so far, what are the things he witnesses and feels?
Chapter #70
Transient things
Be it happiness or harshness, his life has probably had more of it than most. Though he talks of it as though he's enjoyed the bittersweet of it all, by no means is he glorifying the past.
"I don't want to go back to that time. Physically, I've grown older and the era has changed, but basically the present is the easiest to live in. I guess it's thanks to 'experience'. What's enjoyable in growing up is knowing what you should do and expanding your repertoire of how to deal with things."
As the months and years go by, despite being busy, Nino's and body and soul remain stable and complete. Depending on the season, he'd also be filming for a drama or movie, but in general, there's the core schedule of recording their regular shows which takes up the biggest chunk.
"Only, in an idol's case, the number of regular shows you have isn't proportional to your popularity. The sort of shows you can do depends on and varies according to your group or individual directions. For me, basically I like variety shows, so I'm grateful that we were given the opportunity to do them. These days, even if you're all Johnnys, the content of your activities and your base can be totally different."
Certainly, for each senior who hosts morning news shows, you can also have juniors who never appear on TV except as actors.
"There are many types of idols out there aside from Johnnys, so you have a wide base. It's just that I think the original definition of an idol was 'a transient thing'. For idols, I think it's considered part of the process to 'debut even though you're unknown, shine, and appear everywhere...' (laughs). We're now in an age where idols can use social networking systems or blogs to convey themselves, so it's possible to elicit a response from there. I wonder if people can be as crazy about that sort of idol? If you want to be a true idol, it's better not to self-publish too much."
You've got to accept that there will be things that go against your grain and that your fate is only fleeting, Nino says.
If you fear the risk of it ending, that's not love
"For me, I think that big breaks that the idol groups of yore went through when they broke up are amazing. Just like fireworks launched up, spectacular in an instant and vanishing in the next. That sort of ending, as an idol, is beautiful. I mean, that's something you won't see twice, right? Like
James Dean; when people remember them as a group, they'd be immortalised just as they were back in the day, never ageing, right? Those members, they'd say, they were a wildly successful phenomenon in their mid-teens, and then they broke up when they were just barely 20. I think that's really intense. Even now, to think that despite that the members are all alive and leading their own lives, you'll never again get to see all of them as a group again - that's incredible. For the past and present, bearing in mind the pain and transience as idols, the way things are might be changing."
Meanwhile, Arashi welcomed their 15th anniversary.
"Somehow or another, we're a group with stamina. But now it makes me wonder: what exactly is an idol? (laughs) I think that passing on the opportunity to sing, dance and shine to your juniors is natural. But even without all that, it's not like Arashi is going to break up in mid-flight hereafter, either. I mean, we're all adults. From here on, even if something were to happen beyond our control temporarily and our relationship turns sour, what we show on TV wouldn't change by a single millimeter, I think (laughs).
"To begin with, we've never had a single fight since we were kids and we've never once lost our tempers with fellow members. When we hear stories from other groups, there are those who deepened their bonds through fights and then there are those like Kanjani∞ who have the kind of relationship where they have New Year parties, too. For us, it's not like that at all. I don't think there's a single member amongst us who would be the type to confess their true feelings. But it's precisely because of this that things are comfortable and we'll always be close."
Nevertheless, he doesn't think that the 'stable present' would continue endlessly. As always, he says you never know what's beyond this point.
"But the fact that there's an unknown risk is what makes it interesting, right?"
Interesting? In this unstable age, there are many who'd rather not have any risks in love and in changing occupations, though...
"If you only think about future risks, you wouldn't be able to do anything. In love, if you only fear the risk of it ending or the damage of hurt feelings, then that's not love to begin with (laughs). I mean, even for those older than me, there are those who are still in love. I'm sure they've been hurt plenty of times. Even so, the fact they're not turned off by love must mean, surely, that they've accepted the transience and suffering and that love is a wonderful thing, right? With that experience, since they know that, that's why adults still dare to love."

Kazunari Ninomiya
Born 17th June 1983 in Tokyo. This autumn, their 13th original album will be released. They will begin their nationwide 5-dome tour from 14th November onwards. Normally, Arashi rarely have meals together with their fellow members. About a year ago, Nino talked about how he went to Aiba-kun's house to hang out. "Even so, we haven't done so lately. But even if we did, I don't think anything incredibly interesting would happen, so it's not like I would deliberately bring it up on TV or anything (laughs)."
