Weasel!

Mar 02, 2013 22:11

I saw a weasel (Mustela nivalis) today. This is the first time I've ever seen one living; and is the first mustelid I've seen in the wild other than sea otters and North American river otters. Fortunately, I didn't kill it; it darted in front of my car, then quickly ran back again and disappeared into the grass.

Neat!

As far as mustelids go, I've only seen skunks and minks in the wild.

I had to look up the name because I did not recognize it, but I know I learned the species name of the Least Weasel. I wonder if it changed or my memory did indeed just fail. I guess I'll check my books when I get to the office.

Having seen film of them, I'm amazed you even saw it! And hi, Van!

It was (fortunately) hard to not see it, as it did dart in front of my car. ;)

I am, of course, intensely jealous.

Oh, how cool! Not sure I've ever seen one in the wild - just zoo-bound skunks and otters. It's rather unfortunate that so much wildlife considers humans to be something to avoid at all costs, but so it goes.
