Oh my. According to my LJ stats, I haven't updated in two weeks. Two weeks ago I was busting my ass trying to get all my studying done for finals, not to mention the fact that I needed to get my 12 pieces in for AP Studio Art. At the time when all of the craziness was going on I was a complete mess getting to bed at 2 or 3 every night, and I was ( Read more... )

TRYing to EvolOollvvve?

I like it. Shes stretching herself.
I think you would love the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. It seems to mirror what you want.

I just brought Jennie Devoe to work today :)

no, there's a newer one
than that. it came out
last week.

'educated guess'

i'm not sure what to think
of it yet, i like the spoken
word tidbits, and a few of
the songs have caught my
ear, but it needs repeated
listening to while driving
time.

I've noticed that with every new album that Ani puts out, the *more* repeated listenings it needs in order for me to like it. That's not so good - we're all probably being brainwashed or something! Oh well...But spoken word?! Enough said - I'm definitely going to check it out now, I'm a sucker for spoken word...

Hmm, I think the track listing on Evolve should list Evolve exactly like you typed it. "TRYing to EvolOollvvve" I mean, that *is* what it sounds like when she sings it! Personally I think the album is pretty decent, but I think it scares off a lot of first time Ani listeners for some reason. Maybe TRYing to EvolOollvvve has something to do with that? ;)

And I would *love* to make it to falcon ridge one day. How many times have you been to it? Speaking of Falcon Ridge - I've skimmed through some of the Deep Community book that you were telling me about, and I really like what I've read so far. Thanks...

So you know how there's the whole "take your son or daughter to work day"? I think it would be *much* more interesting and cool if there was a "take Jennie DeVoe to work day." Heh.

I saw Carrie Newcomer in Bloomington this summer and was also not so impressed.

I've not had a whole lot of time to listen to it, but definitely digging Educated Guess.

Yeah, Carrie Newcomer seemed really pretentious too. And I dunno, if she totally rocked I might be okay with it, but...She didn't, so....

And I'm definitely not going to trust you on the Educated Guess thing - I think you'd absolutely love *anything* that Ani put out, even if it was like 60 minutes of white noise. Heh. ;)

after my first listen to "educated guess" I was like "welllll..." but on subsequent listens, I absolutely adored it. The mood and mindset that ani seemed to be in while writing and recording this album almost mirrors what i'm going through right now, so I identify with the songs pretty deeply. so yeah, I give it 5 purple cookies.

There are quite a few of those "welllll..." CDs in my collection that have totally grown on me. Why/how does that happen?! There are so many CDs that I just didn't "get" when I first bought them, and now they're some of my favorites. That seems to happen a lot with Ani's stuff, not to mention Patty Griffin's new stuff. Weird.

And five purple cookies?! I like that - I think I'm going to steal it from you! :)

I do the same thing with CDs, I'll buy it, listen to it, hate it, throw it in the back of the collection...then months later, pull it out and listen to it, and absolutely love it..it's weird how that works =)

oh, and feel free to steal the purple cookie thing, take it and spread it around!

i havent heard the cd yet, but i def agree with random quotes written on scraps of paper and napkins and then having them accumlate everywhere. i def have several post it notes scattered on my desk from a night when i couldnt fall asleep due to all the thoughts pounding in my head. and i want to put them into something realistic but havent gotten around to it yet, and still it gives me a sense of accomplishment. that im expressing something of myself. excuse me for my ramblings. been a long day

Oh my gosh - post it notes are *the best.* They're so great for jotting down random notes and stuff. The only problem with them is that they lose their stickiness if you use them too much. : / Have you ever seen Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion? The "I invented post its" scene is definitely a classic.

heh, that is a very adorable picture of you up there.

ani difranco... i've been meaning to listen to more of her music. i have a couple of mp3s, but there are no doubt a heck of a lot more songs that i'm missing out on.

as for albums that have an initial "welll" reaction and then grow on you..ha, i am very familiar with that. pavement is a band that tends to have that exact effect. their music sounds like garbage ('actual' garbage, not the band) at first, but then after more listens, everything seems to become so clear and lovely... it's really neat.

hope you're well. missing your writing.

I just realized that I never replied to this comment. I feel bad for being so absentminded...It's funny that you mentioned Pavement though - I stumbled across a random quote from them the other day, and I really liked their lyrics.

Anyway, I hope you had a wonderful birthday, and that things are going well for you in general. :)
