As for laptop vs desktop, it depends on what you need.
If you want to be able to take it with you and work other places besides home then you want a laptop.
I don't think you're doing too heavy duty stuff so the whole get more bang for the buck on a desktop won't matter, not to mention you won't be going for the high end laptops either so I'm assuming power really isn't an issue.
As for number two, I would get a desktop. I recently built a new one after my laptop died. When I had my laptop, I would carry it around even sometimes when I didn't need it. Although I do think it's nice to be able to go to a coffee shop and write a paper, when I get an urge for a laptop I just borrow one from school for free.
Of course they do. You don't carry your tower around, accidentally drop it or drop stuff on it =P. If one part breaks, the rest of it isn't as susceptible to breaking too (like if your keyboard goes..or touchpad..or the monitor).
Knowing you, I'd say you'd probably be happier in a studio and just visit friends when you want to... that way you really don't have to worry about anyone being messy or loud, etc. On the other hand, if you have a room to yourself it might be nice to have your friends right there. Either way, you won't be very far from them, right?
Laptops don't last nearly along, but I would die if I only had a desktop, so... yeah. But if you don't really ever want to take your computer with you anywhere as it is, go with a desktop.
The living situation depends on your preference. But remember that in the dorm you don't have much privacy, and in an apartment you can live with people without seeing them all the time, but they are there when you need them. I personally don't think I could've lived by myself because I would get bored. Living with other people in a house/apartment you can have your alone time, but you can also just go into the main living area and be in good company. I just like the idea of having both, you can have privacy or good company in the same place. If you're living alone and you want to talk to someone you have to call around, when you live with people there is usually always someone there.
Yeah, but if one of the people you're living with likes to have people over a lot, your common space is usually taken over by people you may not know/like. And you can't say they have to go because they're not your guests. There are a lot of good things about living with friends and there are a lot of annoying things.

So yeah, main issue is portability.

It requires planning ahead, but heck, it's free.
That and I just feel like desktops last longer.
