Hermione ear infection redux

Hermione has a ear infection. Actually her old ear infection never really went away. :( After she went swimming, her infection flared up badly. She yelped when I cleaned her ears on Thursday night. Then on Friday night, she yelped when Walter tugged on her ears to pet them

My dog is a floppy eared lab who started having pretty nasty ear infections a couple years ago. Several visits to the vet did almost nothing. I poked around on the web and found this stuff:

I just mix the genatian violet in rubbing alcohol (none of the other ingredients) and pour it in, and we have had no more trouble-- in fact I have been using the same stuff after I swim for my ears (I use to use just rubbing alcohol). We both seem pretty happy. Something to consider once her ears are all happy and healthy, but after a bath or a swim.

Don't feel bad - our Natasha got an ear infection recently as well (and she didn't handle the medication *nearly* as well as Hermione seems to have - we had to muzzle her and hold her down!)

But our vet told us that 1) ear infections are really common, and 2) once a dog gets one, it doesn't take much to have it recur, regardless of how careful you are. And some dogs are really prone to getting them - I think the foldover ears contribute, more opportunity to hold in water, etc.

Just keep alert for them, and she (and you!) be fine.

hi there I am on my second dog and his ears always seemed to have discharge so I thought thats how he was, until it became apparent that it was getting worse, his ears were really bad by the time I brought him, it happens, don't be hard on yourself. I went tool Olsen to get his teeth cleaned he is almost 7 and they found a cracked tooth that they removed, boy did I feel awful, but Lori at cci told me that also happens :)
