If people think you're heartless then they need to get I grip I think, I speak as someone who dumped their boyfriend after a week at uni though.

I certainly don't think its your fault, or that you're heartless because you aren't. I don't see why "people" (and I dont know who these people are so i shall speculate) would take any kind of side in this situation, which is quite clearly personal between you and Nick. Some people are just tactless, Jen, and are unable to see when someone is hurting if they aren't blubbing on the floor infront of them, rather than dealing with it privately and in their own way.
Everyone needs to think about the future for themselves, all you have to do is look at all the people that have gone their separate ways, to different unis. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Also, it takes 2 to make a relationship work, you could nt possibly be the only one at fault (if indeed you're at fault at all).
Remember you have friends that love you.
