You know what? I LIKE the Black Album.
That's right, I said it. I like Metallica's Black Album, and always have. I even liked Load. Also, I'm listening to Megadeth's The World Needs a Hero right now. And I like it.

Best (Musical) Act in the World
Apparently, there really is an award for "Best Act in the World", at the Q Awards; the Q Awards being a large event in the UK. This year's nominees included Coldplay, Oasis, Muse, and fgggflbppIthinkIjustyawnedtodeath. OK, I get that organizing music into genres and even sub-genres (I guess there is such a thing...) can be useful. Meshuggah
I was listening to Meshuggah's newest album, ObZen, and pondering the syncopated rhythms and non-standard time signatures they use, when I had an insight: in this respect, Meshuggah is like Rush, if Rush actually rocked.

Vocals
I've resisted for some time really liking Arch Enemy (in their current form, with Ms. Gossow on vocals). I had this vague idea that I don't really like higher-pitched growling vocals; and this is true, to a point. In the case of Arch Enemy, though, as I listened to some more of Doomsday Machine, the instrumental work is just so good.

The Plus Side
At the Gates: Slaughter of the Soul
I've listened to most of this album a couple times through, after checking out At The Gates for the first time a couple weeks ago. And I have to say, this is an album and a half. Awesome stuff, and gets better with every listen. If you like metal, give this one a try.

Am I the on one who doesn't love Dewer's?
Among people who drink Scotch and are snobby about it, there is some stigma against blends. OK, fair enough; you have to draw a line somewhere to have proper snobbery. What I don't understand is why Dewer's is held up to be sort of the "good" one. An experience at a restaurant prompted me to think of this, and I realized I'd heard it before. ( Read more... )
