I finished Book 6 last night: Predators: Pedophiles, Rapists, And Other Sex Offenders by Anna Salter. It was informative, suitably disturbing, and probably more important for me to read than I gave it credit for because it has a section on sociopaths and deception. I am one of those people that believe deep down that there is good in everyone, so ( Read more... )

I really hope that I haven't spent much (if any) time with people who would belong in that books. I have known guys that wouldn't have surprised me if they turned out to be rapists, unfortunately ( ... )

That fits right in with the sociopath chapter. I have read a couple of books on the subject now because I have to keep remindind myself that its not ME its THEM sometimes.

As you know, this is a hard thought process for me to adapt. ;)

That actually sound interesting!!

Does the theme touch on they can or cannot be rehabilitated?

They didn't really cover rehabilitation. It focused more on how they operated and had the perps talking about their crimes in their own words. There was very little remorse in the vast majority of the subjects, and when they gave them immunity to discuss crimes for which they were not caught, the numbers of victims per offender skyrocketed. If what they quoted was accurate, its revolting.

I don't believe that you can rehabilitate a sex offender. I believe that sort of thing is as permanent as height or eye color.

What do you think?

I think the book is depressing. I think your self-proclaimed need to read this in order to "wise up" is depressing.

I don't think it is a look at the ugliness in humanity that is going to help you, I think it's self respect and a look at the beauty that is in you that is the only thing that can really help guide you successfully.

Point taken- I'm working toward the latter and I think, in some little ways, I'm getting better than I was. I still have bad days but I have a lot more good days than I used to. :)
