Nice update joetheone June 2 2008, 04:21:29 UTC
Ennis you learned a hard lesson but well maybe you will remember this from now on that yep it is the two of you and two human beings loving each other is what counts the sex, the age, the color or difference in whatever does not matter it is what is in your heart and dam it all I hate predjudice but I guess that is predjudice in hating a person who is predjudice so I guess I just have to feel sorry for them for not knowing what they are missing by this hatred in the fact that they would get to know some mighty fine people if they let down this hateful attitude. Joe, we have to live in hopes that Annie Proulx's story might shift some of those prejudiced people out of themselves so that they can finally see the truth.

Wow! This is a really beautiful chapter. Tough to see Ennis with a woman, tougher to see him struggling with his feelings for Jack still after twenty years. But so uplifting in the end, Jack and Ennis and their makeshift wedding vows. What a clever way of finally cementing their relationship. Well done.

I, too, have been woeful over Heath recently. It will continue to hit us out of the blue from time to time I imagine but it's good to know we are not alone.

Kathryn, I thought the wedding vows might be a little over the top but they seemed to work. I liked putting them in.

And Heath - I doubt we'll ever be alone in mourning him. But it will get better eventually. I hope.

Oh gosh.
Don't get me wrong - I am surly relieved that Jack forgave Ennis. Yet I can't believe he did so easily.
Ennis fighting his wars with himself hurting the ones around him just as bad ... that's tough. But hopefully that was the final battle. He was able to make some confessions to himself and to Jack at last.
Wow, not an easy read on this Monday morning. Thank you for continuing this beautiful story, all the best, B.

I guess it's a matter of interpretation, but I see OS Jack as always backing down when Ennis plants his foot, and in the end he is unable to say what he should, so he dies thinking he's maybe lost Ennis. While I see that Jack would get angry, in the end he just wants Ennis and will put up with far more than he reasonably should.

Yep, in this particular version of Jack, I do agree with what you say here, that he puts up with far more than he reasonably should. Actually, that interpretation is more canon than any other, as it's an open question whether at the end of the movie Jack would have gone to Pine Creek if he had not died. So Jack's "capitulation" in chapter ten does not surprise me; it's the way Jack has always been, really. It's *Ennis* who has the growth in The Outland. Which is fine.
Love,
Jenna

I'm curious to know which bit doesn't sit right with you. When an author makes that kind of comment, I read the chapter thinking, "hmm, was it that bit? or that paragraph? those words?" I think this kind of climactic scene where they profess their true feelings and Ennis gets past Earl the must be the hardest to write because it's kind of a leap into the void. I wouldn't mind if you gave your thoughts on this over at the DC forum.

I've really enjoyed your story so far. This type of chapter makes me think it's nearing the end, though. *sniff*

Great comment! I'd be happy to continue the discussion on DCF. My main problem was in trying to get the climax just right, not to heavy or schmaltzy.

Still a way to go until the end, BTW.
