On of the things I really enjoyed in this chapter was picking up all the echoes of the OS: Ennis rejection of the waitress' soft, yielding body and "wet gap", his attempt to take her anally, and her comment that it's disgustin, his realization that he just doesn't want vaginal sex, that this woman is just another substitute for Jack. Then you recapitulate Jack and Ennis' history, from their reunion to the FNIT, in which Ennis admits his desire for Jack and his enjoyment of being fucked is stronger than the ghosts of his father and Earl, to the reversed dozy embrace in which Ennis becomes the comforted one and says what he should have said then, "I love you." The thunder and lightning which surrounded their most important times together reappears, no longer the voice of a disapproving god. Jack points out that him and Ennis, that's a life. It ain't no little thing they got goin. In fact, for all intents and purposes it's a marriage. And the core of it is: Worst part of it was knowin you didn't want to be what I was. Jenny, I always love your comments. The bit about what Ennis was thinking is interesting. I have a belief that just because someone is inarticulate to a certain degree, as Ennis is, it doesn't follow that their thoughts aren't grand in some way. You are right that he wouldn't think the words as written, which is why I put them in the second person, but I feel he could have the concepts, however vague, in his head. And at this time he is grappling with stuff which his conscious mind will never find the words for.

And yes, Jack does forgive easily but OS Jack always backed down. I'm not no queer/me neither, the lie in the motel room, going away shattered after the divorce yet continuing to do things Ennis's way, coming to comfort Ennis after the argument - he had a pattern of desperation which is truly awful. And in this story he has got Ennis so much further than he ever thought he would, so I guess he's willing yet again to accommodate Ennis's unfortunate behaviour.

And I'm happy to go to DCF and explain what was a difficult bit to

So did I! Believe me! I figured it would take some pretty powerful emotions to drag it out of him.

Such a deep love is both a blessing and a curse
but I hope for both of them they've found their way at last.
They are such brave men, Jack for forgiving and talking
and Ennis for trying so hard to overcome his lifelong repugnance.
For me every chapter is a pure joy to read and I cherish the time I can spend with your writing
