Wowza! Sounds like quite a move. That would drive me nuts. I hate being in limbo unless it's by choice (like when camping/hiking). As far as zip ties, I think they should ban them because foolish people (like us) have a habit of stabbing ourselves while cutting them. My recently defunct garlic press resulted in permanent nerve damage to one of my fingers after I stabbed myself with my Gerber trying to cut the damned zip ties.

. . . I'm pretty sure it's been more than ten years since I heard that. Thank you. I think.

(xanthamarioff: yow, and congratulations on managing to get moved in spite of the movers.)

I don't think I've -ever- heard that. I'd assume guard, just on the basis of, you know, it being guard, but...

Mr. McFaden, actually. He taught biology and awesomeness, and lacked hair.

Holy crap, are there any movers in NoVA who aren't terrible? I used a company called Smooth Move to get up here and they jerked us around like crazy, to say nothing of the shenanigans I went through with my Uhaul storage unit before the move.

Yeah, Ace was actually great, -and- less expensive (and still insured and all). Not such great English speakers, but not impossible to communicate with. And I'm told that Able Movers and Storage are also fantastic, but they're more expensive...

I don't know how you avoid this nonsense, how you find a company that's actually reasonable. Maybe personal referrals, but that's kindof what I went on (secondhand and 10 years ago) to hire SS, so... ugh.

It's only a flesh wound!

Actually, now it's a small pink scar, very slightly raised. It's a little tender to scratchy things and pressure -- moreso than it was a week after I hurt myself, which seems unreasonable to me. And it seems to be over the itchy phase, so that's good. ("I itch... a quarter inch under my skin." For that, you can't even cheerfully ignore "don't scratch" advice for a moment of relief.)

(It's joining the other scars -- the one from a watchband, and a door latch, and the back end of a hammer, and some mysterious pinkie-nail-flesh injury. If I wore white gloves all the time, you'd never see any of my scars -- they're all on my wrists and hands. I used to think this was kindof cool, and now...)

Alas, I too have stabbed myself with scissors while trying to open zip ties. I was at work, trying to open a box of fresh drugs, and the tie suddenly gave way whilst I was plying it with scissors. I got a small L-shaped cut similar to what you describe in my left wrist. Very little blood for as deep as it was, but I wonder sometimes if I didn't hit a tendon cause it still lets me know it happened six months ago.

Congress should pass a law banning such things. Also, war.

It's bizarre, isn't it? Adam's response was, "Why were you using scissors? Here..." and finished cutting them with a pair of wire cutters. Brilliant, simple, effective, easy, and I just hadn't thought of it at all. (Now I know.)

I envy your [semi-]professional move. We've been moving our own stuff, via large van, occasional pickup truck, occasional trailer(s), and my in-laws' assistance, for the last week and change, with a bit more still to do. (Fortunately, we've only moved 60 miles.)
