Cable tv

Jul 17, 2007 22:04

It's happening. Tomorrow. I made a tough decision in January 2002 to cut the cable. Turn it off completely. And I've lived for five and a half years without cable. No cable, no satellite, nothing. Just DSL for the internet. But then I got a roommate who got a job at comcast and so we're getting free cable tv installed tomorrow. I'm worried that I' ( Read more... )

Yeah, you'd think that, and I'm sure I'll get back to that state. But currently any time I'm over at my parents house, or out at a bar or restaurant or even at work when we have tv in the lounge, I get mesmerized. I'll be talking to someone and just trail off in the middle of whatever I was saying and stare slack-jawed at the screen. What I usually find interesting is that even though I haven't had cable in so very long, I'll still see a lot of the same shows that I used to watch when we had cable. Again, I'm sure that I'll get back to the state where I ignored it 90% of the time. :)

Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the only people in the cities that doesn't have cable. My cable-less-life has a lot to do with wanting to spend the money, but I also don't want to give myself any reason to watch more television than I already do. I have two televisions, one is ancient, the other is crappy. I often think that I won't replace them if/when they go out.

Needless to say, I have no idea how 'awesome' cable television is. If I had an opportunity to get free cable, I might do it. But I'd try to limit myself to educational channels like the History Channel, or Discovery Channel, or the Food Network. Which are usually the only channels I stick to anyway.

Do you find yourself watching a lot of T.V. now?

No, not really. I watched 1 show all year on tv (heroes) and downloaded another for watching at work (smallville). If nothing else, I'd occasionally download other tv shows and burn them to dvd for watching at work. I did that with season 1 of Monk, seasons 1 and 2 of Lost, seasons 1 and 2 of House, Wonder Woman, etc. I don't really say cable is awesome. I don't really say tv is awesome. I mostly watch movies on my tv currently. However, tv does have a kind of glamour about it. The pictures move and the people talk and it just draws you in. I think we become inoculated to it to a certain extent from constant exposure. I fear that my current lack of exposure will lead to me getting seriously drawn in. Especially since we'll be getting HD, and PVR, so it'll look pretty and we can watch it whenever we want while skipping over the commercials. I'm sure I'll be able to get over it. :) I have in the past. I usually prefer books to tv in the long run ( ... )

I gave up not only cable, but pretty much all TV in December '04. I only use my television to watch DVDs. At this point I would also be terrified that if I got cable again I might end up having my life sucked away by the TV.

Reality is, you're gonna get addicted to it again. However, it won't last forever :) Eventually you'll get bored with it and you'll move on. Just try not to sweat it so much and let someone else be in control of the remote. That inevitably kills my interest.
