For Gerard, it was when he realized that his grandmother was impressed by his talent. All grandparents are legally bound to act impressed, and all kids know that blank face, that obsequious tone. "Good job! How nice! Boy oh boy, you're gonna make records someday, aren't you!" Just like a two-year-old who kicks his father's golf balls around the basement is going to be a soccer star. But just like kids can hear fake appreciation, they can hear the real stuff, and when Gerard's grandmother fell silent and sighed once and said, "...well," after he sang a solo from Peter Pan, his belief in himself turned real ( ... )

Kevin bothered him the most, and for the longest time. When he was young it was a worship thing, all the stronger because it was bound up with brother-feelings, father-figure-feelings, and rebellion almost strong enough to be hate. After Kevin married it was a hopeless, jealous thing, because he was so obnoxiously sated with Kristin and AJ wasn't sated by anyone or anything. But Kevin fought for him and cried for him and cared for him when he strayed too close to death, and came back from five years of having a life to share AJ's. He didn't know Kevin could still hurt him as deeply as he did by leaving, but he supposes that means he's grown up.

Well, I'd have to imagine him as a totally different person with a different history to answer. If he'd never been with his father, if he was willing and able to settle down somewhere, sure. I don't see why not.
