I just gorged myself on vegan coconut pie. Now I feel dirty. I went to a vegan potluck with Jenna and her friend Colin and his friend Owen, who are most excellent. Today was pleasantly full. I went up to Park City for the first time to do a fur protest and meet Jenna. Utah is in Sundance Craze, so the streets are swarming. Okay, so what I really want to do is hike the Appalachian Trail. Thru-hikers (people planning to hike the whole thing) leave in droves from Georgia starting in March. Went to a New Year's party tonight. The more native Utahns tell me about Utah, the more I realized what a messed up place it is. They told me about how the Utah Valley south of Salt Lake is nicknamed "Happy Valley." It's "mind-bogglingly Mormon," three ex-Mormons told me, almost 80% Mormon with super-strict culture. There are good things in Utah. The Mormon Tabernacle is lit up with thousands of lights, surrounded by colorful bare trees and fountains and families and couples posing kisses. There's a massive bookstore called Sam Weller's that I haven't even explored a corner of, and it has a little cafe that's perpetually full of people. There's actually ( Read more... )

Back from visiting family in CA and feeling a bit unanchored. Am a a bit unanchored.
