Needlework for the win
I have a headset which I use when I chat with friends via the free(-ish) long distance of the internet. The headset is getting rather old, though it's still working fine. A couple weeks ago, I noticed that the little foam-stuff covers on the headphone speaker portions were worn out: they had holes in them, and it was amazing that they hadn't ( Read more... ) -
"Older and wiser" has its advantages
When separating an egg just now, I clumsily got a tiny bit of yolk in with the egg white in the mixer bowl. Years ago, I would have felt obligated to try beating the egg white anyway, but now I have accepted that that would be folly. Childhood's End
I first read Clarke's Childhood's End quite early in my SF-reading, and while I've re-read it several times since then, it hasn't lost its power to give me goosebumps. I was surprised when I read that the SyFy network (still hate that name!) was going to be broadcasting it as a miniseries--starting tonight!--and I'm looking forward to watching it ( Read more... ) -
Coincidence? Possibly...but likely not
So, I received in the mail today an envelope which was blazoned with the words "Cards Inside." The edge of the envelope had been torn open to the point where the contents were visible when the envelope was bent a little bit. Turns out that the things I learned in grade school were missing a few items
This is probably something that every other adult in the country already knew, but it was new to me. A couple of weeks ago, I was putting on my shoes before going for my usual walk, and looked at the long dangly loops on my laces which were left when I'd tied my bows. Small change
So, as of today, the number of pennies I've found on the ground while taking my usual morning walk is five. That's over the course of a couple of years, so it's not like people are strewing pennies around with abandon, but if the trend carries on, in a decade or two I'll have enough found change to buy something ( Read more... )
