Song is "
Iris" from The Goo Goo Dolls.
“You know, when you called me about meeting this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.” Carlos shifted his eyes around the music video set to make sure no one could hear them. “I thought once the movie was done, we’d take a little break.”
Reiko played with her necklace nervously. After the success of the last video they did, they’d been asked to star in a romantic comedy that had done well, to everyone's shock. It wasn’t that the script was bad, but this genre, well she always assumed it was so flooded, nothing really ever stood out. She had underestimated the chemistry she and Carlos generated on screen. Just watching over the editing footage the few times she’d been in the room was enough to make her shiver.
Carlos saw her shiver and pulled her closer to him, forgetting about everyone else rushing around them for a minute. “You cold?” He pulled the jacket wardrobe had given him off and wrapped it around her. Reiko smiled up at him quickly in thanks but dropped her eyes back down, continuing to play with her necklace.
“You can’t blame me for the fact that the movie is successful. Well, I guess you can half blame me.” She poked him in the chest and grinned back up at him. He narrowed his eyes at her and rubbed the place she’d poked.
“Yeah, but a music video. We don’t exactly have a good track record when it comes to these things.” He leaned in closer and she closed her eyes when his breath drifted across her neck when he spoke. “The last one kinda got us into trouble.” He ran one finger along her collarbone. “If you tell me we have to get in bed again for this one, I’m gonna have to take an incredibly cold shower before hand.”
Reiko blushed and gently moved his hand away from her skin. “No bed this time. They just want us to convey the emotion in the song. It’s the theme to the movie so we kinda have to do it.”
“That doesn’t sound so bad. I can walk around and look all brooding. I hear I’m good at that.” He winked at her just as one of the many people on the set approached. “You guys ready? We’re gonna introduce you to the band and go over exactly what we’re looking for then we’ll start shooting.”
Carlos reached over and took her hand, a smirk on his face. “Time to go pretend.”
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew this would be anything but easy. He didn’t say anything to Reiko, but his agent had mentioned the video before she’d called him. He knew the words by heart by now. He didn’t know what they’d want him and her to do, but whatever it was would be difficult.
Difficult for his heart as well as his head.
They’d agreed to take things slow. They weren’t so well known that they’d end up on the front page of every gossip rag from here to the U.K. but it was close enough to his divorce that it might raise a few eyebrows. He really didn’t want to get into it again with Sharisse. The first video, followed by the movie...it hadn’t been good. When he got the call about doing another video, this time to go with the movie, he’d said yes without thinking about it. Carlos didn’t kid himself, he wanted any excuse he could come up with to see her. But once he heard what they’d be acting for, he almost backed out.
Things were just a little too close to home for him with this one.
Carlos leaned over and looked through the closest telescope, Reiko coming into view below. They had him high up in a tower, telescopes everywhere. He could slide his chair to any of them and get as many angles of her as he wanted. That’s all they wanted him to do, watch her.
The pressure in his chest tightened.
She was gorgeous. She’d always been gorgeous. From the moment he met her, he’d been attracted to her. They both knew it, but a close friendship kept it covered enough to keep them out of trouble. But all the reasons they needed that cover were gone. She was there, on the other side of the wall he’d put up to protect himself.
Reiko did her part well. Moving from one shop to another as he watched. The wind moving her hair around her face; blowing her dress around her legs. Every now and then he’d see her glance up. She knew he was watching and still she made it seem as if she felt someone she didn’t know following her. Carlos pushed quickly to another scope, the wheels of his chair scraping against the floor. This time she’d stopped at a street corner and looked right at him.
You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be.
Carlos sat back quickly and collected himself. He took a deep breath and after catching the eye of one of the cameramen, continued switching to random scopes. The music played over and over. Something about helping him with timing. Right now, though, he wished he could turn it off. They weren’t even in the same building and this was worse than the bed scene they’d had to do last time.
Enough was enough. He was going to make his move this time. When all of this was done, they’d do things right. The normal way. No more sneaking around. As the final moments of the video started, he slid slowly to the biggest scope they’d had. Peering through the lens he could see her close up. Reiko tucked a few curls behind her ear and smiled at one of the cameramen as they finished with her. The sight of her burned him.
Yes, he’d do things right this time. He couldn’t screw this up. She was....she was everything.
When everything’s made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am.
