snoozing_kitten Kame hardly found his life boring, but when he got bogged down, he was lonely. He was only human.
He had one of those nights where he couldn’t really sleep, too exhausted from drama filming and rehearsals to muster the energy to shut his body down. The phone glowed with some message from his manager, something about a changed morning meeting time that he could barely read through his haze of exhaustion.
Four hours from now. You've got to be joking.
The thought of oversleeping and missing anything snapped his brain into an adrenaline-motivated state of wakefulness. His face ached and he knew his skin would pale and his eyelids would sag all day, but the risk wasn't worth it. Resigned, he curled up in a corner of his bed, wrapped in a blanket, head resting on one knee. It was too quiet in his room, and everything sounded louder. He wanted to just dive under a pillow and pass out.
No! Must stay awake. I need a distraction...
Scrolling up and down through his phone's address book got boring after five minutes, and re-reading all of his e-mails only made it to seven before he got sick of looking at emoji. He was actually astonished at the sheer amount of emoji he managed to use in one day, which, he fondly recalled, was one where he had far too much free time on his hands.
What he wanted was company, but who could he call in the middle of the night?
The question answered itself when his phone chimed.
Fr: j-o-k-e-r@je.biz
Are you awake?
Kame raised an eyebrow, snuggling further into his blanket. Why the heck was Koki awake at this time of night?
To: Koki Why are you awake?
He sent off the message and buried his face in the blanket, waiting for the e-mail chime. Instead, the tone for a call came through. With a sigh, he wedged the phone beneath his cheek. "Hello?"
"Hey, workaholic." Koki's voice sounded just as heavy as Kame's eyelids felt. "You ought to learn to sleep. I bet you haven't eaten, either."
Kame didn't bother to remove his face from the comfort of its soft cradle. "I ate. Lunch, I think. Stop worrying." Adjusting the phone, he waited a moment in silence for Koki to speak. No response. "Why are you up, anyway?"
"Eh, my little princess was acting funny, so I'm sitting up with her."
Kame suppressed a giggle. He knew how it went, though. Love was no small thing to anyone, especially not to Koki, but it was so easy to visualize the crease in Koki's brow and the way he'd have to stretch every half-hour or so. He'd refuse to take his eyes off her, Kame was certain. "You're acting too cute. You're going to completely ruin your image."
"Image? What image?" Koki laughed softly. "I'm thug to the bone."
"Right. Like a kitten. Or a puppy. Real tough guy."
Koki tried to sound shocked. "Hey, I'll have you know the Juniors are running scared. They know I'm watching them. I have spies everywhere."
Kame shook his head for a moment before sleepily recalling that Koki couldn't see him. "I haven't seen anyone but Taguchi running the other way yet. Ah, did they demote him while I was working?"
"Kaaaaame, your jokes suck at 3 AM, you know?" Kame could hear Koki stretching, and unconsciously mimicked the motions he knew Koki was making, rotating his spine and rolling his shoulders. The distant connection comforted Kame, re-energizing his body and making him smile.
"My jokes always suck, don't they?"
"Pretty much," Koki laughed, then, "Ah, sorry, sorry Sakura, go back to sleep, yosh, yosh..."
"Right," Kame said, rolling out of bed. "I'll come over. I can take a hint."
"Will you?" Koki whispered. Kame had read his motive perfectly. "Please? I'm so bored. I'm dying here. And you can nap, man. I'll wake you up. Promise."
Kame laughed, and though it turned rapidly into a yawn, he began to pull a pair of jeans on. "Give me twenty."
Everyone, he typed into his message drafts as he walked out the door, loves a little differently, don't they?
