When he was three, he liked to hide under his mother's desk. She never knew he was there, of course, because he was that good at hiding.
When he was four, he snuck into the state luncheon under the food cart and listened to the grownups talk about a bunch of big words he didn't know.
When he was five, Mama waved him over and put a finger to her lips. She smiled at him and they snuck into Daddy's office.
She told him there was a dragon on the loose and she needed his help to catch the thing.
CODA
"'...and into the night of his very own room, where he found his supper waiting for him. And it was still hot.'" DG spoke softly. She glanced to her son, who was completely out, and smiled. She wondered if he'd ever be able to make it through the whole book.
Closing the book, DG set in on the small table next to the bed and turned to pull herself free from Teddy's hold. As she moved up from the bed, DG reached for Teddy's plush dragon and he pulled it close as soon as it touched his hand.
"Night, Max."
