13 I laughed out loud at the sight of a gothic bear sitting on top of my snare. It is the current boom on the streets, these gothic bears which are silk screened on shirts, mischievous faces on badges and even bags printed with these bears. And here I have one sitting on top of my snare, dressed up similarly to my costume from Filth in the Beauty, its pink ears pierced with multiple black hoops, a patch on its eye giving it a rugged look. Aoi who entered the room next also caught sight of it.
“Cute”
I grinned widely, examining the bear closer, half guessing that it is from Miyavi. Only he would do such a thing. I sat the bear on top of my backpack which I had dumped on the floor, starting my warm up before the practice begins. I saw a blonde walking zombie who made his way mechanically to the steaming pot of hot coffee on the burner. Aoi shrugged, returning to tuning to his guitar. Uruha gave the room an once-over glance as he sipped his coffee, his soul returning to his body when he then turned again, eyes on the pink bear on top of my bag. He yelped loudly, scalding his tongue on the hot coffee as he quickly turns to place the cup on the table, a tissue dabbing on the spilt coffee. That was an odd reaction from him. A soft sniffle alerted me to yet another person entering the room.
Ruki bundled up in a thick scarf, coat and sunglasses hurried past us to Uruha, Reita holding onto Ruki’s bag staring after him with concern. The two of them must have come in together. I watch Ruki pull off his scarf and sunglasses, dumping them on the table before shedding his jacket on the coat. He looked awful. His eyes reddened from lack of sleep, his skin paler than usual. Why am I still paying attention to him? He looked up, seeing me stare at him, me quickly looking away.
This is stupid. How long will we pretend that we are strangers? Pretend that we merely work together to create the music that we love. But then again, how can I let myself get close to him? How can I near him knowing that I would always want more than what he can offer me? How long before the whole band is affected? Uruha pressed a palm on Ruki’s forehead, worry etching on his face.
“You are sick!”
Ruki pushed away the offending hand, shaking his head in denial. Uruha rested his hands on his hips, a stubborn look settling in.
“Yes, you are. Go back and get some rest”
“I am fine”
“No, you are not”
He silenced, staring at me. His forehead felt hot and I could see perspiration forming on his face.
“Go back and rest”
He stared at me a while longer as I removed my hand from his head, his head dropping in defeat. I helped him into his jacket, rebundling the scarf over his neck, pointedly ignoring his eyes on me. Uruha tapped his chin knowingly before suddenly exclaiming.
“You were sick since that night, weren’t you?”
Uruha took the silence as a yes before he too went on a nagging mode which could equal mine.
“Which idiot will go out in the middle of night without any jacket or scarf? Even though it may not yet be winter yet but at night? What idiot will do that? Tell me?!”
I couldn’t make head or tail from Uruha’s scolding before Ruki finally held a hand up.
“Shut up blondie”
The said blondie gave an indignant huff before turning away to his now cold coffee. Reita just smile to me before ushering Ruki to the door, taking on the task to send our vocalist home. As they neared the door, I saw Ruki murmuring something to Reita as Reita left him at the door, coming back to us to place a few sheets of paper on the table.
“New lyrics”
I watch Reita leave with Ruki, worry nagging at me, wondering whether I should go with them or not. But then, there is no reason for me to do so. Is there? I turned to Uruha who is now reading the lyrics, concentration making him frown. Catching a few roman alphabets, I guess Ruki had again written in English this time.
“What were you talking about earlier?”
“Hmm?”
“To Ruki”
“That idiot went out after we returned to the hotel in Matsuyama. He didn’t return till dawn that night. I saw him returning to his room, shivering from being out in the cold too long”
“What were you doing up roaming the hallways at that time?”
He had the decency to blush before turning back to the lyrics; Aoi pointedly paid more attention to his guitar.
Matsuyama? Did he go there? Uruha who was done with the lyrics, passed it on to me to read next. My English was never the best but then as I read on, I could imagine how this would sound already, the music to back this lyric already forming in my mind. At the same time, something in me broke.
