if it means i can't taste. some people assume i can't, so i have to explain i can. and they ask how it happened, to which i reply that i've never been able to smell.

Them: Really????!!
Me: Yes, really.
Them: How do you TASTE?!
Me: *offers arm* I dunno, you tell me.

Actually, haven't used that yet. Need to start. Hmm...

And that was two questions, but they've been pretty invariant.

That's a good one, I'll use it next time I get asked in those exact words.

It's like "Did you get a haircut?" "No, I got them all cut!" Only works if they use the right phrase. But when they do - whoa ho ho!

so can you taste?

everyone does this. you can't smell? can you taste? no smell? can you taste? duh! they're two separate senses!

anyhow... who else in here can't smell? is there any way short of surgery to fix it? i feel so dumb! little girls bring flowers up to me and i act like i'm smelling them and knowing that i'm totally missing out! and perfumes, shampoos, deodorants, etc. i can't smell! which also means i never know if i stink or if a shirt is clean or dirty! someone help me!

I can't smell, never have been able to. It's called "congenital anosmia", that means that you were born with it. There's no way to fix it that I know of, not even surgery. I try to find unscented shampoos etc. because I don't want to smell like something that I wouldn't like if I could smell it. Plus, most scented toiletries today are made from petroleum byproducts that aren't good for you. I don't wear perfume. Why would I? Then again, I don't wear makeup either, it's just my personal style/preference/philosophy, so I don't think I would wear perfume or use scented shampoo even if I could smell. I don't know if I stink so I just try to keep myself really clean. I don't know if my dirty clothes stink so I never wear anything more than once, I wear it and wash it ( ... )

"Doesn't it change the way things taste?" Well, duh, it must, but since I've never had much of a sense of smell, how would I know what things normally taste like?
