I dug it. I find this film as the same sort of feel as some of the films that were my favourites when I was a kid, like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and The Goonies. Obviously, this flick had lots of CGI which those 80's films didn't have, but the spirit was there. And this one definitely had some animatronic stuff in there, too ( Read more... )

Umm........disturbing. I was in film school when this first came out and I had some friends who saw it and told me all about it. I remembered the details that they told me but never got around to watching it. Finally did. I'm torn between thinking that Solondz was just going for shock factor and thinking that there are lots of unsavoury people ( Read more... )

I caught these two films at a screening at the Dalhousie University's art gallery here in my new, post-Japan home of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Both films were Workers' Progress Administration efforts from the Depression and were presented as part of the gallery's current exhibit focusing on humanity's impact on the environment ( Read more... )

A fairy tale for adults, I suppose. A story made from the stuff of myth: archetypes, earth, primal forces, elements of both life and land. I can look past the complete and total evil of the fascist Captain and step-father to Ofelia (an evil step-father instead of the usual step-mother) because I recognize the Captain not as a flesh-and-blood ( Read more... )

Godard once said something to the effect that films are never finished, they are only abandoned. Match Point is a perfect example of that. With it, Woody Allen almost returns to Crimes and Misdemeanors to take another stab at similar concepts and devices, minus the comedy.
