how much more this is there??? i mean- i'm enjoying your posts, but i keep thinking 'surely it must be over soon'. although... we have had neither rapey sex, nor soothing OTP sex... so i assume at least.. six more chapters?

no further news :)

We'll be half-way done after the next chapter (that will be the one with the rapey sex. o__o). It's novel length after all, if only because it manages to have a lot of filler ;). I'm guessing that the fic versions fame in fandom is also partly due to it's length?

Re: peace "breaking out": in fairness to the author, that is a phrase that Jack Aubrey uses when he's worried about a peace leaving him on the beach.

But that's enough of that.

As for the scene where Arch-er and Marshall trade backstories, it really threw me a loop when I read it. I mean, these guys have been friends for about three years by now. Have they honestly never talked about their families before now?! Exposition at its most cack-handed, there.

“Adrian’s been having me up for dinner the nights you’ve been gone.” And for dessert afterwards.

Aaargh, this was another bloody tic in the writing that threw me every single time. Davy is supposed to be traumatised by his treatment at Adrian's hands, yet he still manages to come up with this constant snarky inner monologue to go along with it. I mean - I don't know, I'm no expert in this kind of psychology, so for all I know, there are abuse survivors who can view their ordeal in sarcastic terms, as a shield or whatever. But as it stood here, it made it impossible to believe in ( ... )

Jack Aubrey is famously fond of mixing his metaphors though. That's the way I'd take the phrase. *g*

Yes, that didn't quite add up. We're supposed to believe they have a friendship so beautiful that Archer doesn't want to ruin by admitting he's gay, but they don't exactly behave like they've been best buds for three years.

Yeah, whether or not Arch-er's reaction is completely realistic or not, this is a novel that's going for a certain kind of tone, and musings like that don't exactly foster a dramatic atmosphere.

Hm... I may have a look at the next chapter today or tomorrow. If it doesn't kill me I might continue this.
