As many of you know, I have a hearing loss.  Well, over the last few weeks I’ve been having problems with the hearing in my left ear.  The sound would fade away until it was practically gone, but would often be back to normal after a day or so.  Except for this last time.  As of right now the hearing in my left ear has been gone for five days.  I

Oh Ben, I'm so sorry that things have deteriorated. One day at a time is the best solution -- it helps from getting overwhelmed by the whole thing. I hope UofIowa can help, or recommend you to a program with financial aid that can. *huge hugs*

Ben, I'm so sorry to hear this. Whatever solution the doctors might come up with, it's still a huge psychological adjustment for you to make. *big hugs*

My aunt was quite deaf but taught lip-reading and as long as you were facing her, she could carry on a conversation perfectly. Have you considered taking classes, or have you done them before? The nice thing about lip-reading is that in a social situation, you can focus on what one person is saying instead of turning up a hearing aid and making all the background babble louder.

I do use lip-reading a fair bit, though I admit I've gotten a little lazy over the last several years. Definitely a good time to get in more practice with it. I'm also thinking of taking a sign language class as I never learned it beyond the alphabet.
