What is a good English song to teach a 9 year old? Recommended songs in English teaching books just don't work because they're aimed for toddlers. (Just because English isn't your first language doesn't mean that you have to learn what native English speaking toddlers do ( Read more... )

If she's a slow learner, then a full-on pop song might not be what she needs. (Songs are hard to learn, and often feature slang and idiosyncratic language unfamiliar to a language learner.) A jumprope chant or a hand-clap song might be more appropriate.

Thanks for the link, it's very helpful.
I don't think I would be having so much trouble if she weren't a slow learner. My other friends' kids can actually hold conversations with me, so she baffles me quite a bit.

For my students, age six-seven, every week I pick a new cd(or burn one) from my collection and play it at lunch time that week sometimes two if it goes over well, and they start to pick up the words a bit. Right now my kids are grooving on Sufjan Stevens, previously they really got into the sound track to Across the Universe. Early beetles stuff is good. a friend of mine uses kids bop for his teenagers which is aparently regular pop songs with clearer lyrical wording and - all sex content.

You see, if she (and her mom) were as hip as you I wouldn't be asking this question. Her mother doesn't even let her listen to K-pop because she thinks the lyrics are inappropriate. I have to find a song that will be okay with her mom as well.
I think your kids have it great. Sufjan Stevens at that age, what a way to build a music listening history.
