I'm still batting around adorable little fonts, but no matter how much they squeak and entertain me, the realization is sinking in that I don't have the artistic ability to make them look great. It's a tricky subject, involving swashes and serifs and display fonts and text fonts and decorative fonts, and of course, fonts that are absolutely perfect for your book cover, but have to be licensed, and have to be readable at 10 feet for a real book, and at 72x112px for a thumbnail and so on and so on ( Read more... )

After some back and forth, we've arrived at an agreement on the rough sketch, and now she's off doing whatever mysterious artsy things artists do. It still looks like fantasy, but a shade less epic. So the artist has sent me a rough sketch for A Wind out of Indigo, and after blinking furiously for a few minutes, I'm coming round to it. I did tell her that I wanted mood rather than fidelity to the story, and that she gave me--it's highly romantic and other-worldly.

I'm still dubious about the horse, though.

Today is campus move-in day. For us, it's a reason to stay way up on the sidewalks. For the parents of freshmen, it's a reason to start drinking heavily.

The campus is a maze of one way streets,  some of which become become two-way in the evenings, or two-way if you're driving a bus, or three-way for service vehicles, and the signs are legible only ( Read more... )

Why, oh, why, didn't I pay attention to the reviews? But I was an eager fangirl and went to see it anyway. Almost walked out several times, but usually I only walk out when I'm offended. This was horror. This was pained fascination. This was disbelief that anyone could live through this with their pride intact.
