Dean pulled the Impala into the small parking lot across the street from the playground. He turned his head to face the little boy sitting in the backseat. Will was kicking his legs impatiently, and his blue eyes shone with joy and excitement, both at going to the playground and spending time with his Daddy. When Dean smiled at him, Will giggled brightly.

“Ready to go play, kiddo?”

“Yeah!” The three-year-old exclaimed loudly, and Dean chuckled softly as he pulled the keys out of the ignition and got out of the car.

Dean saw a lot of Melissa in Will. The boy had her eyes, the amazing ice blue eyes that Dean had fallen head over heels for the first time he glanced into them, and Will had Melissa`s curly hair, though the boy`s hair was dark brown, and not black.

Will wasn`t just like his mother where looks was concerned. Dean recognized certain traits in his ex that had been passed on to their son. All the good ones. Will reminded Dean of Melissa in the way she used to be. Before she turned into the ice woman she had become over the last couple of years. In Will, Dean saw Melissa the way she was years ago, back when they were happy, and they could have a civil conversation, back when a simple disagreement didn`t turn into a screaming match.

But he also saw himself, in the way little Will could be a bit of a show-off. But mostly Dean`s son reminded him of Melissa, and of Sam. Will and Sammy had several things in common. Though Will could act tough around his friends and people he knew, he was very shy around strangers. He was also a bright little boy, a fast learner and quick on his feet.

The kid seemed to have an energy that knew no bounds, and keeping this in mind when Dean lifted Will out of his car seat, he sat the boy on his hip, deciding it would be best to not let him down until they reached the safety of the playground.

But Will thought differently. He immediately began squirming in his father`s arms, begging to be let down.

“No, Will,” Dean said as he slammed the car door shut. “Daddy`s gonna carry you, just for a little bit, OK?”

“Noooo!” Will whined loudly, kicking his little legs. “Wanna waaaalk Daddy!”

Dean grunted with pain and irritation as Will kicked him in the ribs. He tried to lock the car (Dean Winchester took no chances with his baby!) but it was a difficult thing to do with a wildly squirming and complaining toddler in his arms. Dean tried to readjust his grip on the boy, but with the way Will was struggling he almost dropped him.

Finally he set the kid down on the ground with a stern warning to stay put. But in the one and a half second it took Dean to lock the car, Will had already taken off towards the playground. Trouble was, in order to get there, he needed to cross the street.

Dean saw Will run off, and called after him, but the boy either chose to ignore his father, or didn`t hear him over the noise of the cars passing by on the road. Dean was on the boy`s heels in a heartbeat, catching up to him just in time to prevent him from running right into the road and getting himself run over.

He grabbed the kid by the arm, yanking him forcefully backwards. Dean`s heart was racing crazily in his chest, and his voice rose as he spoke sternly to his son: “You never, EVER run into the road!”

Before Will had time to speak, Dean turned him sideways and delivered four hard, stinging smacks in quick succession, making the boy squirm in an attempt to get away. The three-year-old was crying after the second smack, and when Dean let him go, he tried to utter an apology through his tears.

Daddy`s smacks really hurt! Will had never received a proper spanking from Dean, and the man had no intention of giving Will his first one today.

They had both gotten a scare, Dean when Will ran off, and Will when Dean grabbed him and yelled at him. The few swats would just have to do, Dean decided.

Dean bent down so he was at Will`s level. “You must never run into the road,” he repeated seriously. “You could have gotten badly hurt. I told you to stay with me, you know you`re not allowed to run off from Daddy or Mommy.”

Will knew, he`d just forgotten. He had been so eager to go to the playground, but he wasn`t sure he felt like it now.

Dean looked at his weeping son, his heart racing crazily in his chest. “Jesus, you scared me, Will,” he muttered as he scooped the boy up in his arms and rocked him gently, making his crying slowly halt.

Will was glad his father wasn`t mad anymore, and he enjoyed the comfort Dean was giving. He threw his small arms around Dean`s neck, clinging to him for dear life.

“Sorry Daddy,” he mumbled, his head leaning against Dean`s shoulder.

“It`s OK, you`re alright,” Dean soothed, giving the boy`s back a few gentle rubs. “Just don`t ever do that again.”

“OK.” Will sniffed.

“Alright, let`s go to the playground,” Dean said, doing his best to lend some enthusiasm to his tone of voice.

He felt bad about having to smack Will, it wasn`t exactly the best start the two could have had on their fun-filled day together. Dean did however know that he hadn`t had a choice. Will had disobeyed him and endangered himself, it was sheer luck that Dean had managed to catch the boy in time before he actually managed to get into the road.

He held his son tightly in his arms as they crossed the street. This time Will just held on to his Daddy, making no sign or gesture that he wished to be put down.

After pushing Will on the swings for a while and playing a quick round of tag, Dean followed his son to the sandbox before seating himself on a bench a few meters away. That way he could allow his son to play on his own and interact with the kids around him, but Will would still be under the watchful gaze of his father.

Dean sighed as he sat down; wishing Dawn was there with him and Will. He took a quick glance at his wristwatch, deciding he would leave in a little while to go pick her up.

Dean picked his mobile up from his pocket and dialed Sam`s number.

It rang twice before Sam picked up.

“Hey, Dean.”

“Hi, Sam.”

Dean could hear a baby crying in the background, it was Sam`s one-year-old daughter, Emily.

“Listen, Sam… Uh, is it OK if I come over later?”

Dean hadn`t seen his brother in a while now, and he felt like talking. About Melissa, about the kids… Everything. It would do him some good to pour his heart out to someone who understood. Sam always understood everything. Or they could choose not to talk, and simply share a beer and moments of quiet understanding between brothers.

“Sure. You OK? Something happen?”

“Nah, I just wanna talk. I`ll come over in a couple of hours.”

“But we can talk now?”

“See you later, Sammy.”

Dean hung up and stuffed his mobile back in his pocket.

He watched Will. The boy was sitting facing Dean, but he was too busy playing to pay his father any mind.

Such a cute kid, Dean thought to himself. When he grows up, the girls will be dropping like flies.

Dean caught himself hoping that Will would find himself a nice girl, someone he could be happy with. Dean hoped Will`s experiences with women would be better than the ones Dean had had. But it would be many years until Will would have to deal with that. In any case, Dean was more worried about having to deal with Dawn and dating. He would just leave that part to Melissa.

Dean let Will play and enjoy himself for ten minutes more before deciding it was time to go pick up his daughter. He got off the bench and walked over to the sandbox.

“Playtime`s over, buddy. We`re gonna go and pick up Dawn now.”

But Will was not ready to leave. He pouted slightly before continuing his activity, as if he hadn`t heard what his father had said.

Dean gave a small sigh. “Will,” he said, sterner this time. “Come on. I`m not going to tell you again.”

When the boy still didn`t move, Dean bent down and picked him up, trying his best to ignore Will`s whining and kicking.

“Don`t wanna leave!” Will exclaimed stubbornly, trying to wriggle out of his father`s grasp.

“We`re going,” Dean said firmly, keeping a hold on the toddler`s arm as he dragged him away from the sandbox.

An earsplitting screech escaped the lips of the three-year-old, making his father turn sharply and stare at him for a split second. Will was usually quiet and docile, and besides, Dean wasn`t there every day to deal with his tantrums and childish outbursts, so the sudden defiance came as a mild surprise to the father.

“NOOO!” Will screamed, stomping his little feet.

And that was all it took.

Dean reached around the boy and smacked him twice, making a cloud of sand and dust rise from the seat of Will`s pants, effectively stopping the tantrum before it escalate.

“Oww!” Will yelled, bursting into tears. “Daddy`s mean!”

Dean felt really shitty about swatting Will on two occasions in the same day, fearing that the boy would now assosciate spending time with Daddy with getting his butt smacked.

Nice going, Winchester. You get to see the kid twice a week tops and here you are spending half the time you got with him scolding and smacking. He won`t be too excited next time you come pick him up. Fuck. What am I doing wrong? Dad didn`t treat me or Sammy any different, and we both turned out OK. Well I did anyway.

“You were being naughty, so I smacked you,” Dean told Will, his voice still firm, but slightly gentler now. “When I tell you to do something, you do it. No objections, no yelling. Got it?”

He got a teary nod in response. It was good enough. Dean knew his son had gotten the message.

“Now, can you walk to the car, or does Daddy have to carry you?”

Will reached up towards Dean with his small arms. “Carry,” he stated simply, sniffing hard, his blue eyes still brimming with tears.

Dean parked the car in the driveway behind Melissa`s car. Dawn and Will were in the backseat. Dawn had been chattering on non stop after Dean had picked her up at her friends house. She`d been really happy and excited about seeing that it was her father coming to collect her.

The five-year-old girl opened the car door and jumped out.

Melissa came outside. She had heard the unmistakable sound of the Impala engine. She lingered in the doorway, watching her ex and the children.

While Dean unstrapped Will from his car seat and lifted him out, Dawn ran up to her mother.

“Can Daddy stay for dinner?”

Dean sat Will down, and turned to face his former girlfriend.

Melissa wanted to say no, Dean could tell. But faced with the pleading hazel eyes of her pretty daughter, she couldn`t turn her down without appearing mean and spiteful towards Dean. So she nodded curtly, saying: “Sure. I`ll set up an extra plate.”

The two adults shared a silent look, Dean mouthing a “thank you” to her above the kids’ heads.

“Yay!” Dawn exclaimed joyfully before running back to Dean and wrapping her arms around his leg. “Can we play with my Disney Princess dolls?” she begged.

Dean chuckled as he bent down and lifted his daughter up, tickling her and swinging her around so she laughed and squealed with delight.

“Sure we can, sweetheart,” he said as he held her close and kissed her on the cheek.

“Can I play too?” Will asked.

Dawn stuck her tongue out at him. “Boys don`t play with dolls, stupid!”

“Dawn,” her father admonished her gently.

“You are going to take a bath, young man!” Melissa said, walking up to Will and grabbing his arm.

The boy immediately opened his mouth to form a loud objection, but stopped upon seeing the warning look on Dean`s face, the swats he had received earlier still fresh in his mind.

“I`ll give William a bath and then get dinner started,” Melissa informed Dean.

“OK, I`ll be in Dawn`s room. Just call me when it`s ready.”

Melissa took Will inside, and Dean bounced Dawn slightly on his hip. “Let`s go, princess.”

Dawn giggled. “I`m so glad you came today, Daddy.”

“Me too, sweetie. I`ve missed seeing you.”

As he walked up towards the house, Dawn asked the one question Dean just couldn`t bear to hear, let alone answer: “Daddy? How come you and Mommy don`t live together anymore?”

Dean swallowed as he carried his daughter inside and up the stairs. “It`s complicated, Dawn.”

“What does `complicated` mean?”

“It`s… difficult to explain.”

“Oh.”

The little girl was deep in thought for a moment.

As he entered the bedroom of his eldest, Dean ran his hand over her blonde head, whispering in her ear: “I love you.”

Dawn responded by snuggling close to her father`s shoulder. “I love you too, Daddy.”
