GB: Refugees

Nov 10, 2011 12:36

By definition, a refugee is one who flees in search of refugee, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution. However, this time you didn’t flee: you were saved. You were saved from your world’s destruction (this is a proved fact).

S.S.Thor, part of the S.S Fleet, exists to rescue people from those planets that were destroyed, by using the Infinite Improbability drive and its side effect, the wormholes. Wormholes are gates from a place to another, ignoring space-time logic; they are not controlled, they are unpredictable and they pulled you from a time when your planet was still alive and brought you on board before you faced the destruction.

Importance of the IID: Wormholes and keeping you alive
Keep in mind a wormhole can ignore time and space, it doesn’t mean it’ll take you from your world during the exact moment of its destruction. It means that you were indeed saved, but you may return back to your planet, live there for 5 years, and only then the world will be destroyed. And yes, just like they have saved you, wormholes can send you back to your dying world.

Trying not to deviate from the original point, you can be sent back to your world. If you are lucky, your world will only be destroyed in 100 years, so only your children get to feel that despair. If you are not lucky, you may feel it in two months. It greatly depends when you were picked relatively to the lifespan left on your planet.

Don’t panic, though. Those people who disappeared do have a chance of returning back to the Thor later on, or perhaps even sooner than you’d think. There are two types of wormholes, the ones that permanently send you back to your home planet (and so you might be destroyed along with it), and the ones that only send you temporarily, to pick you up later on and return you to the Thor.

Besides the wormholes, the IID has another function: it keeps us alive. All refuges were supposed to be dead and we are in a permanent state of unstableness, therefore moving away from the Thor is dangerous and you will eventually die. It doesn’t mean you can’t leave the Thor. "Dying" is a matter of how long you stay away from Thor, not proximity of the ship. It depends on the person and the circumstances under which they were rescued, and so it may take just few weeks or over a year.

Refugee’s list
In order to know who was saved, there is the Refugee’s list. Vogons work methodically and quite efficiently when it comes to this list. They know when someone arrives and when someone leaves, and for them to update the list accordingly. The Refugee List is never wrong; if someone is still there, it means they are on board or they will soon be on board, even if they were taken by a wormhole.

Arriving on the Thor: Vogons, the babelfish and the four items
When you arrive on S.S.Thor you are brought to the Arrivals area. There, you are faced with a strange creature. That’s a Vogon. Vogons - a quiet and “friendly” race as long you don’t talk to them; or look - are employed by the Captains of the S.S. Thor to keep the incoming and outgoing refugees coming and going as smoothly as possible. After you’ve filled the hundreds of different forms, they give the newcomer four items and an extra that will be permanently attached to you.

Once you fill the form 13c: " Babelfish Release Form", you are given a yellow fish that is stuck inside your ear. You are able to understand every single language in the universe. On the other hand, this does not apply to text, but that’s where the Guide comes in hand.

Another item they give you is the Guide. You’d be surprised with the things you can do with it. The Guide works as a cellphone, personal computer, recorder (visual and audio), dictionary, internet and GPS, translator, and allows you access to the network; to those who don’t know what any of that means, I advise you to finally try out your guide: write the word you don’t know and hit “search”. Allow the Guide to guide through it.

As said above, it allows you to post to the S.S.Thor Intranet (called by many Refugee’s network), meant especially to refugees in order to know each other, interact, work, share and act like idiots. The guide keeps records of every single post made to this refugee Network, which means if you wish to know if you were once on the Thor, you can actually read what “you” wrote (as long as you have a lot of patience or know how to properly function with the server and programs used).

The Intranet works based on a program called FlamingFerret, which can be found on every computer on the SS Thor, and can also be installed as a plug-in for the guide. The first time you sign in you will be asked to provide a user name, and you'll also be given the option to have one randomly generated based on your data. No posts to the network may be deleted due to a glitch, the same glitch that will not allow us to change our usernames on the guide. While it’s impossible to delete what you’ve once posted on the Network, you can turn it private - such option can be found in the Post’s settings.
The guides have a parental filtering system as well, which automatically locks any improper post from whoever has the filter on.

These guides are cheap and anyone, even non-refugees, can have one. If you lose your guide, you can quickly get a new one by filling out hundreds of forms that you will hand to the Vogons, or you can hope a maintenance robot will eventually find it and return it to your place of residence.

The towel is one of the four items given to you. Why? Who knows why, but keep it because along the way we learn we need things we threw away.

Another item is a piece of paper that has a number divided in two. The first part, a 3, is the floor number where you’ll be living. The second is the room number. You’ll be sharing your room with several other refugees and along the way, as you work and have money, you may upgrade rooms. The last floor is the 8th and it’s the best you can get.

The final last item is a card a card with your name on it, or several round, flat objects known as credits. Credits are the money used on the S. S. Thor, and are accepted anywhere in the universes where the S. S. Thor takes you. You can earn more by working, stealing, begging, whatever you used to do when you were in your world.

S.S.Thor’s objective: Magrathea
The point of work isn’t just gaining money in order to get a better room. You’ll need the money because you can get your world back as long as you pay for it. In order to get your world back, the captains are trying to find Magrathea, the planet to revive all planets. It is the home of a form of specialist industry: custom-made, luxury planet building. Sad to say that there are no coordinates, some call it a myth, and we are randomly hopping around space hoping to randomly find it by using the improbability of that fact (hence the drive).

Resurrection of Refugees
As refugees, we have the chance to rebuild our worlds, however, space is incredibly dangerous and… whatever. This is not the actual reason why we cannot die permanently. Oh yes, when you die, you are brought back to life; resurrected.

Only refugees are brought back to life, not citizens, because a regular citizen rarely has enough money for this. While refugees have this right because captains pay for it, in exchange for a toll, once a refugee becomes a Citizen, this contract is no longer in action. The reason why is because all refugees are being safed to reach home safe and sound; if they become citizens, they have a new home

Because we are resurrected, there is no reason why the Vogons should ever take the names off the Refugee list.

Refugees vs Citizens
By norm, people on the Thor, citizens, are working to make refugee's life better and not their own, hence their disdain. To aid this, Citizens are not resurrected. So it’s not unusual for refugees to be treated badly by Citizens, and this explains the existence of groups such as Thor for Thorians or the Purists.

Thor for Thorians is a group that has been putting pressure on law enforcement and forming vigilante groups, with the intent of making life rough for refugees and to hopefully drive them out. These citizens' families have been on the Thor for many generations, and their arrival was not linked to any world destruction.
The Purists are a radical faction who are under the impression that our mission is deemed a mistake by a higher power. They believe the worlds are being destroyed for a reason and that the refugees should not be allowed the right to exist.

Usually Citizens are the ones who offer jobs (though such may also happen in the Planet), and these jobs are not for refugees only. Even citizens do those jobs since some people will do anything for money, though it’s much more usual for a refugee to take them than a citizen. You can assume these jobs are basically “low-life” so the low-lifes should take them. In case you don’t want to take orders from anyone, you may open your own business as long you’ve enough money to do so.

Thor’s captains
The special case of S.S.Thor’s captains was that they refused to show their faces to the refugees they have saved. Why? Perhaps because no one would take them all that seriously, or perhaps because they were planning something. Whatever the reason was for them not to show their faces, it changed due to a terrorist attack lead by Refugees on August 20348.

Two refugees, sick and tired of not being able to get some answers, broke into the newsroom and took over, broadcasting their demands to the entire ship, one of them being exactly to meet the captains who always hid from us and to finally answer all the questions the Refugees on the Thor had. This was how we first learned about those who controlled this huge spaceship and due to this action, now they dislike us and we distrust them.

Before you even dream of doing this, I must add a note: the Captains let us know they do have a back-up plan if this sort of thing happens again. They just hoped not to use it at the time.

Outside contact
We were told it was impossible to know where other ships are or contact them (either from the S.S.Fleet or not). This is, however, a lie and many events have proved other wise:
- A group of refugees managed to return to Thor after being lost in space.
- A probe was sent to find out the destiny of a world belonging to a refugee and returned.
- A refugee left the ship for 6 months in order to explore space, and returned to this specific ship without any strange “voodoo”.
- Thorian Pilot's Association - that trades between ships and worlds - is able to contact their ships even when not close to Thor, locate them and reach them.
- Some refugees still contact other ships.

Paradoxical meetings, special case of S.S.Sif
During our journey, S.S.Thor came to meet a sister ship called S.S.Sif. There, we refugees were presented with a reality we had not yet realized: there can be several different versions of the same person.

In this large place, there are different universes, different time lines and parallel dimensions. Because of that, there can be several different versions of yourself roaming the universe. On the Thor, such thing doesn’t seem to happen; you will never have a clone, unless you already had one when you were in the planet you were brought from (yours or not). However, on S.S.Sif there were many different versions of the same refugee.

Basically, you are not the only one who exists, and you may have a weird parallel evil twin somewhere.

Different worlds
Most people first arrive on this ship directly from the universe that had been their home all their lives; so, when they arrive on the Thor, their home world was destroyed. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone.

Some of the refugees don’t come directly from their world; instead, they come from an intermediate world, where they have been either for a little while, either for over a year. When a refugee from that intermediate world shows up, that intermediate world was the one that exploded, not their original.

The captains blatantly lied to the refugees by denying it was possible for us to contact other ships. Such data can be found in the following access: DATA ACCESS 1 + DATA ACCESS 2
This was proved to be a lie (see below the sections: Lost in space, Haruno Sakura, Gon Freece, Sho, Loki)

It's necessary to mention, why they haven't lie about other things (so far), they have kept information, claiming we just didn't ask the right questions. Examples of this behavior was telling us we'd die if we stepped away from the Thor, but failing to explain that such process could take over 6 months.

Quite many strange happenings have been going on that may or may not be related to the Captains. For years, S.S.Thor never found another sister ship, yet in just a month they found two (S.S. Sigrun and S.S.Sif). Sigrun "accidentally" exploded right after our captains got the blackbox they so needed, not letting anyone know - even the Refugees that helped them to retrieve it - the actual contents of the black box - they only showed a very touching video about hope and how we should trust our captains (perfectly fitting, considering how the refugees have been against the captains for a while). And the Purists threat also appeared during such time, perfect to make us forget our differences with our captains and fight together against them.

It is safe to assume the captains are fully capable and willing to lie to us. And very willing to try to keep us refugees docile. Such was achieved since no one ever questions our captains anymore.

Terrorist attack
Katsura and Gintoki broke into the newsroom and took over, broadcasting their demands to the entire ship. And while they figure out how to deal with this, the captains declared a state of emergency.

Later that night, another message from the captains was broadcast, announcing a press conference, where refugees were allowed to ask questions and see the captains through video conference.

During the state of emergency, aliens were patrolling the ship at all hours. At first, everyone was expected to stay in their rooms. After a day or so, they started delivering food to keep everyone placated. The security slowly let up, but the situation lead to no new missions handed out to refugees during the month since there was an emergency and the refugees were terrorists.
