The week passed quickly, and Ray had to admit he hadn’t felt more… right. He quickly discovered that he was no different to Bryan when it came to Chung Hu, finding it incredibly hard not to give all his attention to the gorgeous little fuzz ball that would demand to be carried around all day.
Despite some early misgivings, the four discovered that it was possible to live together, Ray learning that Spencer was not as dumb as he came across as, and Lee and Bryan, though they bickered often, formed a deep respect for one another that became a strong friendship.
There was one person who didn’t like the new arrangement: Ian. Both Ray and Lee enjoyed pranking the younger, Bryan and Spencer all too happy to help set the youngest of the Russians up so that he would fall and fall hard. If anything, Ian became overtly cautious every time he came to visit, and finally learnt how to use the doorbell.
By day two Bryan had banned Lee from the kitchen. While the eldest of the neko-jins was a fair cook, he had a tendency to become distracted, and they ended up having to send out for takeaway. Not that anyone minded about that, except that money only seemed to stretch so far these days.
Sure enough, Lee and Spencer’s little stunt when they had come out of the closet made headlines, and the media seemed to be hounding them every where they went to the point Bryan suggested they got a restraining order.
Both Spencer and Bryan eventually got used to Lee and Ray’s buddy/buddy sessions, knowing full well that they were talking about them, yet at the same time not wanting to know why they were talking about them.
“They’re like bloody girl pals,” Bryan commented to Spencer. “All giggling and gossip. Probably compare sizes, too.”
Spencer shuddered. “They’re strange.”
“Tell me about it.”
At the same time Lee and Ray had to grow accustomed to Spencer and Bryan’s own unique way of communicating without seeming to say anything. It was like they had their own code, saying a lot in simple gestures and expressions. Not to mention they would often whisper in Russian before they would both smirk, Lee and Ray certain that whatever was said was about them.
“They’re freaks,” Lee told Ray. “Aliens. Mutants.”
“Agreed.” Ray looked toward his friend and smiled. “But you’ve got to love them for it.”
Their friends were still unsure about the whole idea of them living together, Tyson dropping subtle hints every time he saw them that it would be very good if they came back as not only were they missed, but they were wanted.
Kenny had taken over the money side of things and was keeping them on a tight budget, cutting the spending money by half and bringing all these environmental saver plans into effect that was making life miserable. Kevin, upon stumbling across Lee in the supermarket, had literarily thrown himself around Lee’s ankle and begged him to save them from the brainiacs tyranny.
Ray had gone and spoken to Kenny, convincing him to ease up a bit, but he hadn’t been able to help much. However, Ray made a mental note that once the Championship began he would not be letting Kenny be in charge of the teams finances.
It was late in the afternoon when a knock came on the terrace’s door, Spencer looking up from where he putting away the dishes and moving to answer it. Having watched the car pull up through the window, Bryan slid from his seat at his desk, patting Ray’s leg where the other lay on the bed playing with Chung Hu.
Ray followed him down the stairs, the two finding Spencer, Lee and the policeman in the living room, the policeman looking up.
“Afternoon gentleman.”
“Officer Reed.” Ray frowned, glancing at Bryan. “Something we can help you with?”
“I’m afraid not. I’m here to update you on the case.” Reed sighed, gesturing them to sit down. “As you know, since the investigation began I have been alerting you to any discoveries before the media got a hold of it in the press statements, and I felt I should come tell you personally. We’ve lost them.”
Bryan narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean: you’ve lost them?”
“I mean just that.” Reed shook his head. “For the last few days all our leads and trails have been cold. We’ve had several countries participating in the search, but last night it was officially announced that there are no more leads to follow. The trail is dead.”
Ray let out a long breath. “So what you’re saying is that Kai and Tala have vanished?”
“I’m afraid so. We do not even know if they are still alive, though the morgues and hospitals will alert the authorities if they turn up. All their money was withdrawn in parts from their accounts in cash, so we don’t know if they have any new accounts or what name they’re in. They would have fabricated new identities by now, created new records depending on their contacts. But when it all boils down, everything comes up the same.
“Kai Hiwatari and Tala Ivanov have completely disappeared.”
