Fall 2000 was the start of my super senior year. After three semesters in the Studio with two different roommates, I moved back into the
Oval Office. I was done being the Program Director at the radio station, and I didn't do any more theater. I kept working at CWRUPhone (with another pre-semester stint for NetCom), but my margin for error if I wanted to graduate was not large so I didn't much of anything else outside the house. Well, I was elected Homecoming King, but that was covered in a
separate post years ago.
Inside the house, I am pretty sure this is the semester that I was the
Rush Chair. I was more of a "
plan all the events and let the brothers drag people back to the house" type rush chair. It worked ok. We had six brothers pledge the house in the Fall 2000 semester, one upperclassmen and five freshman.
JoeG - I can't recall if JoeG was a sophomore or maybe a junior, but he was the last brother that we pulled from a large group in Clark Tower over the 1999-2000 semesters. I believe he was from the Cleveland area and majored in computer science, but I could be wrong on both points. BB: Coop.
Sam - I remember almost nothing about Sam. I believe he left the house after I'd graduated. BB: Hsia.
Jaime - Jaime was from... Texas? Somewhere south? He was a Friday freshman who we hosted (probably Hsia) and ended up joining, possibly the only such one in my time as an active. BB: I don't know.
Migs - For someone I actually see with some regularity, I sure don't remember much about Migs. I suppose I could ask him, but it's kind of more fun this way. BB: Jackal.
Nate - I believe Nate was from Chicago. I'm pretty sure he was a computer science major. BB: I don't know.
Wayne - Wayne was from Chicago and majored in econ or some other pre-law thing. He also ran cross-country. BB: Joe (the second one)
With those six added to our numbers we hit 37 actives. To the best of my recollection, nobody left in December, so we went into the spring 2001 semester at the highest number of people that we'd had in my time as an active. Not all of these brothers lived in the house. I think we had a large contingent in Clark Tower still, and the Phi Kap apartment in Little Italy was a mix of actives and alumni over the years, although the exact breakdown at any one point is beyond my ability to remember.
The past year and a half I'd hung out mostly with Rachel and Viv, but this year they were on their junior year abroad in Ireland. As it happened, I met a woman named MJ when I took Spanish. We ended up hanging out (non-romantically) for the next 3-4 years, but at this point it was mostly going to see Spanish-language movies at the Cinematheque for class.
We continued to have a lot of Sigma Psi's hanging out at the house, most of whom I liked and one of whom.. not so much. Most of that was immaturity (both sides), but it did let me have one of my best ever uses of a movie quote ever. At the time, I usually had ice cream stashed in the freezer in the
Greenhouse outer room. Somewhere along the way I offered that person some ice cream and we had a nice chat. As she was leaving, my coworker / her sorority sister Dawn happened to notice this and gave me an inquisitive look, to which I said with flawless timing "
I've spent the last several years building up an immunity to iocaine powder." Dawn busted up. It probably doesn't translate well in writing.
On a family note, my sister moved back into the dorms where she roomed with her friend Kelley. She also ran cross-country for the second year. Did I mention she ran cross-country?
Checks notes. I did not. Well, she did for her first two years of college, which means she played varsity sports for one more year of college than I did.
