Presumably, our pups have lives that happen when we aren't playing them, as none of us can play 24/7. It had been chilly when Jennifer went to the other clinic for her Wednesday shift, and by the time she left it had begun to snow. Jennifer was up early, way earlier than usual. She went up to the compound while it was still dark, ate breakfast (that she cooked herself, leaving her dirty dishes in the sink) and then went to the clothes box in search of a pair of hiking boots and some other gear. It was nuts. And frankly, Jennifer hated it. She had always thought Valentine's Day was a stupid, over-commercialized holiday (and not just because she'd never had a boyfriend to send her stuff). Jennifer hadn't expected to be delivering a baby on her shift--much less two babies--but it had been thrilling and wonderful even with the undercurrent of family tension going that Jennifer hadn't really understood. There was a leak in the roof of her... hut, yurt, whatever this thing was. There was a little puddle of melted snow right on top of her bed, and her hut was small enough that there was really nowhere to move the bed that it would be away from the leak. She'd only been here a day or so, but that was enough time for Jennifer to get the idea that somehow, she really was stuck on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't a dream, hallucination, vision, or a side effect of any infection, virus, fever, concussion, coma, or anything else attributable to any organic cause.
