Trip Report: Yachats 2014
Eli and I are returning even now, via Amtrak, from our week at the beach. The oddest thing about the time may have been the weather; it was sunny and warm for several days and then it turned downright hot on our final full day. The latest mystery bird off the Fill
It being Eli's birthday, I cut out of work early and biked/bussed to meet him at his office so we could both skedaddle over to the Waterfront Activity Center and enjoy some time on the water in a canoe on a blazingly hot day. These stains we had on St. Lawrence's Day
For posterity, I update on jam. We got to the Farmers Market too late to buy raspberries today so, instead, we picked some blackberries on the way home. Popular opinion seems to be that blackberry jam is too seedy so, after cooking them for 15 minutes, we strained the berries. This left us with a fair bit of juice and a lot of sadly discarded pulp ( Read more... ) -
On the West Side of Seattle, Sunday is Raspberry-Jam-Making Day
Today we discovered that small batch raspberry jam is a lot easier than processing forty pounds of apricots in a single hot afternoon. Of course, this means we have only ten jars rather than three or four dozen so we may end up doing more later (which will be news to Eli when he reads this) or maybe we'll just be less sharing than usual. Mount Rainier!
Last year we went to Mount Rainier for Eli's birthday. This year Eli *must* be at work for his birthday so, self-sacrificing sort that I am, I suggested we go for my birthday. An excellent read
Rebecca West's "The Fountain Overflows" ((c)1957) turned out to be a very odd book. Precocious, not dreadfully nice child narrator who reminded me of Flavia de Luce but oh! so much better. She does not appear in this excerpt, however:
