Albert and I are going to have ~7 days footloose and fancy free in Europe. Where should we visit? We will be departing from Paris, having spent the previous week there. Feel free to suggest anywhere within a day's travel by train, but not England since we visited there two years ago.

A paper I've been working on with my research supervisor, Janice, and on which I'm a co-author was just accepted to Science! I am now officially a published research scientist! :)

Dude! Google maps added a "Terrain" button, which overlays a topo map on a shaded relief map! This is incredibly awesome!

I did it! I just passed my quals with flying colours! :) Quals (qualifying exam) is the point at which you typically switch over from classwork to full-time research. It's also the point at which your committee approves your thesis project. You get two tries to pass, and if you don't, you're out. Most advisers don't let students take them ( Read more... )

word of the day: monosialitization. Used in reference to soil formation by hydrolitic weathering processes, to describe the formation of 1:1 layer clays composed primarily of silica and aluminum.

So, lots of people have been talking about "tubular boning channels" lately. Meaning, boning channels in the shape of a tube that you sew onto a corset. However, I can't help but think of "totally rad/funky" boning channels. I don't think I've laughed out loud yet, but I do have to remind myself what they *really* mean each time the term gets

In the past few months I have started giving inexpensive surprise gifts. If I see something I know someone will really like, I get it and give it to them. There's no occasion, I just think they would like it. :) It's a lot of fun, actually, and gives the recipient a nice surprise.
