Forty-eight
Well, here it is: June 14, 2011. I'm 48 years old today. I feel 38, but time passes inexorably. I'm celebrating by cleaning my garage on this nice cool day, and then I'm going to a poetry reading by my favorite poet (Diane Gilliam) tonight. Meanwhile, time moves on.

Bad feet
I've been having foot problems for about a year and a half. At the end of last July, I had surgery on my left foot. However, that wasn't the end of the pain. In December my orthopedic surgeon died of cancer, and I had to switch to a new orthopedist. He prescribed physical therapy, the problem which prompted the surgery having affected my gait ( Read more... ) -
Yay me!
I just installed a second monitor on my home desktop system. I've been wanting a second monitor for a while now. Because my teaching involves so much use of a course management system (e.g. Blackboard, WebCT, Desire2Learn, etc), having a dual monitor setup really helps with grading electronic files that students upload to the dropbox. Cupcakes by Barbie
As an amateur baker, I enjoy watching Cupcake Wars on Food Network. The flavors are challenging, and as a reality competition show, it's pretty fun. The competitors are playing for money that they can put back into their businesses as well as the exposure that providing cupcakes for the event can bring them. Surprise Holmes
Apparently one of my students got hold of the Welsh Sherlock Holmes film from last year, the one starring Gareth David-Lloyd, for his essay on Holmes. Was that version as bad as I'd heard? I'll have to ask him. -
The return of the beard
Something I've been noticing on campus this year: the return of the full, bushy beard on young men. These aren't "I forgot to shave this week" stubble or carefully groomed goatees. These are full, several months, if not years worth of growth, ungroomed beards.
Huh.

Captain Slow, Hamster, and Jezzer come round here
I've always thought that Top Gear needed to explore Virginia roads. It turns out they were in the area! They started out on the Blue Ridge Parkway, only to be disappointed by the low speed limits, and they detoured to the NASCAR speedways to have more fun. I would have liked them to show more of the great views here though.

New Year's Resolution
I lost 25 pounds over the course of 2010. My goal for 2011 is to lose another 15. I'm not dieting. Instead I'm choosing to eat more healthily. This year I quit fast food - Arbys, Wendys, McDonalds. This year my resolution is to eliminated convenience foods and processed foods and cook for myself instead, even if it's just throwing a baked potato ( Read more... ) -
Amazon.com's recommendation system
So in my ongoing search for comfortable shoes, I've bought a pair of Keen mary jane shoes from Amazon.com. Apparently those shoes trigger Amazon's recommendation system in particular ways. All of a sudden, my recommendations have turned into green Mommy recommendations- environmental baby products and so on. That one purchase triggered a ( Read more... )
