This week we began looking at Under Milk Wood. I found acting it out with my drama group to be far more beneficial in understanding the play than actually reading it. Week Eight has allowed us to explore George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four". What a novel! In tutorials, Michael read out a passage from page 51, which introduced the concept of Newspeak.

I made my attempt at Woolf's stream of consciousness last week. So this week i want to focus more on Woolf the person. I saw the film "The Hours" that was based on her life, quite a few years ago. This week in tutorials we focused on Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'.
Ill be honest with you. I wasnt a fan. Content-wise, i believe Conrad to be excellent. If you break up his writing and fully appriciate what he has written, his work is amazing. But using such loooooong drawn out sentences, very few breaks in paragraph and impossibly criptic words? ( Read more... )

Back to uni this week, and for the first tutorial, we focused on the poets of world war one. I found this to be very powerful poetry, and although very sad and depressing to read, i was intrigued by the first line in Hopkin's poem "No worst, there is none".
