Things to do in London

Mar 11, 2009 15:57

I'm visiting London March 18-26th, and while I've already got some plans I'm looking for some things I might have missed. What's your favorite things to do/see/etc in London?

I love that user icon. What game is that, I remember it from when I was a kid, but I forgot what it's called.

Sounds good. I went to the war museum in Duxford last trip, so seeing the one in London would be good. The Transport Museum looks good too. Thanks!

You've read the Baroque Cycle, right? You *have* to go to Greenwich and see the Royal Observatory and the Time Museum. I know you'll geek out just as much as I did. If you haven't already, read Dava Sobel's "Longitude" before you go - it's short, you can read the whole thing on the plane.

Longitude is coming from Amazon, and Greenwich was on the list for sure!

I second the British Museum. It's huge but it's free so you can drop in for however many spare minutes you have and then leave and come back later for more. When I went I actually went on the "highlights" tour which is not free. It was probably worth it though. The one thing not to miss at least is the Rosetta Stone. And probably the Elgin Marbles too ( ... )

Incidentally you can also get to a lot of places within an hour of London by train. Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle...

Actually Stonehenge requires a car or bus to get to and is kind of anti-climactic. And Bath is probably more like 1h30 -- but it's really cool.

Also there are lots of walking tours, including the jack-the-ripper tour and other themed tours like that. And there's at least one that uses bicycles to cover more ground. I tihnk you can also buy downloadable mp3 tours to use at your own pace.

Argh, I can't believe I didn't think of this -- Bletchley Park is also under an hour from London by train (36 minutes if you get the right train according to nationalrail.co.uk).

So many locals don't even know what it is! There's not a whole lot to see but they do have a reconstructed Bombe machine and a partially reconstructed Colossus and of course engigma machines and assorted military memorabilia. There are a couple huts left and some good stories. And some unrelated military and not-so-military things around.

They also have a goofy computer history museum with stuff that is within my memory like Atari and Sinclairs -- you know you're getting old when stuff you remember is in something called a museum.
