This right here was the first RPG I have ever played, and it was a great game to start me off on RPGs, too. It's simple, yet contains some interesting innovations (the big one being Timed Hits), the story is fun and fits the Mario series well, and it's not will-crushingly difficult.
It's also the one game of reasonable length (about 20 hours, give or take) that I've played more times than I can remember. I play it on average of once a year these days, though I haven't done a playthrough this year yet. Might do that when I have less schoolwork hanging over my head.
