[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Luna Lovegood
FANDOM: Harry Potter
CHRONOLOGY: Pre-Epilogue.
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Loony
ALTER EGO: Luna Lovegood

BACKGROUND:

Luna Lovegood is a girl born and raised in the Wizarding World. Which is kind of a misnomer, as it’s really a seperate society set up by witches and wizards to protect them from Muggles (non-magical people). Or set up to protect the Muggles from the hazards of the Wizarding World. It’s a bit of both, honestly.

While she knows of Muggles (hard not to, when you live next door to infamous Mugglephile Arthur Weasley and his ginormous family), she hasn’t had much if any experience with “our” world. Particularly in her formative years when she was being raised by, well... magical hippies.

When her father, Xenophilius, wasn’t regaling her with tales of Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and the Rotfang Conspiracy and whatever other conspiracy theory he was going to put in The Quibbler, Luna spent her days her mother’s side watching her experiment with spells. They were eccentric but happy. Then one day one of her mother’s experiments went wrong. Luna was watching. She was nine.

She had heard the stories about Thestrals, those skeletal winged horses who could only be seen by those who had witnessed and accepted death. Aggressive. Bad omens. Scary. In her opinion, they were kind and gentle and simply misunderstood. She could relate. It didn’t make up for Mum, but it was a little like having friends.

Not that she needed them -- she had Dad. They were broken but happy.

A few years later, the owl arrived, announcing Luna’s acceptance into Hogwarts. Books, robes and course a wand was bought. And to the surprise of, well, no one... she was sorted into Ravenclaw. And bullied. Dubbed “Loony” Lovegood by her peers, who were weirded out by her odd beliefs, odd sense of style and at times even odder actions. One rare exception was a girl in her year, the only daughter of the huge family next door, Ginny Weasley.

She was also, it turned out, a friend of the famous (and chosen and fated and perhaps unhinged and all the other things they said about him) Harry Potter. It was Ginny who introduced her that fateful day on the train. She didn’t become friends with Harry and the others -- Ron, Hermione and Neville -- right away. In fact, she really didn’t like the bushy-haired girl’s remarks about The Quibbler, and told her so. Although to be fair they were nothing she hadn’t heard before. Still, the rest of the ride was pleasant enough. Better than being alone or teased on her way, at least, and she did manage to find out something interesting about The Boy Who Lived: he could see Thestrals too.

Luna and Harry developed an odd friendship over the course of the year. Not many were willing to believe his story about Voldemort being back, but Luna was one of the rare exceptions. For her part, well, he seemed to think she might not be a lunatic. That was enough. Then, of course, there were the Thestrals. It was nice knowing someone who understood. Sure, she’d made peace with it long ago, but it still hurt sometimes. Also, he had enough sense to stay away from Nargles.

Oh, and Harry began teaching them all Defense Against the Dark Arts, which was very nice of him. The educational restrictions placed by the new (ugh) “Headmaster”, Dolores Umbridge were quite frustrating. And Luna had always wanted to engage in some anti-Ministry activities. So she joined Dumbledore’s Army. It was like having friends. With bonus learning! Best of both worlds! Little did she know how handy a few spells taught in secret would be.

For she soon found herself joining Harry and the Trio (and Ginny and Neville) on a rescue mission to the Department of Mysteries to save Stubby Boardman Sirius Black from the Death Eaters! Unfortunately, while the kids managed to hold the older and eviler wizards at bay for a while, it didn’t go too well for their side. The kids sustained serious injuries. (Luna stayed with Ginny after she broke her ankle until they were finally taken out.) The adults who came to rescue them sustained casualties -- such as Sirius Black.

Who Luna found Harry grieving over, at the end of the year, in the middle of her annual search for her own stolen stuff. Wondering about the afterlife, Luna shared with him her thoughts on the matter (that she would get to see her mother again) and that eased his spirits. She spent the rest of her semester visiting her friends in the hospital ward before going on vacation with her father in Sweden. They used the money from Harry’s interview to go hunt Crumple-Horned Snorkacks.

The next year, Luna found herself riding the train with Harry and Neville again. Which was awesome! Like having friends! Because, according to some snotty girl on the train, Luna and Neville weren’t cool enough to be Harry’s friends. To Harry’s shock, Luna agreed, and he promptly set her straight. (Much to Luna’s surprise.)

Though the DA was disbanded this year, much to her disappointment), Luna found herself growing closer to her Gryffindor friends anyway. She accompanied Harry (as a friend) to the Slug Party, where she rambled at chatted to various guests. Then she comforted Hermione Granger after she found her crying over Ron Weasley being a jerkface. Although she didn’t to quite understand why Hermione was so upset, aside from the fact that she’d learned Ron could be a jerk sometimes. But he was also nice sometimes! Like when he praised her Quidditch commentary.

Which, uh. Perhaps I should go back and explain. See, at some point, someone had this brilliant idea to let Luna commentate on a Quidditch match. Shockingly enough it was more about clouds, Ginny, fake illness caused by losing a game than boring things like player names and the score. But Ron thought it was funny so.

Sadly, however, the year was not all parties and games. Once again, Luna found herself in the middle of a battle, as Death Eaters attacked Hogwarts. She was one of the few students to answer the call to protect the school. Luckily, she came out of the battle fine (thanks to some luck-enhancing magic), but the same couldn’t be said for Hogwarts’s beloved Albus Dumbledore. Murdered by Severus Snape. So ended Luna’s fifth year.

That summer she got an invite to a wedding! The wedding of Billy Weasley and Fleur Delacour. She spent most of it dressed like a sunflower and, uh, dancing by herself. Or her dad. Though eventually her friend Harry Potter showed up! And foolishly thought taking a magic potion to change his appearance entirely would keep Luna from ID-ing him. They all hung out with Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ron’s crabby old relative until Death Eaters kind of crashed the party. Jerks.

This year at school Dumbledore’s Army would return. Together with Neville and Ginny, Luna rallied the students against the new “professors” in the Trio’s absence. It was like having friends again! Including the old lessons and ill-advised adventures. Such as trying to steal The Sword of Gryffindor from Headmaster Snape’s office with Ginny and Neville. Except that Luna missed her old friends terribly, of course. Then Christmas vacation came.

She was kidnapped in an attempt to stop Xenophilius’s pro-Harry publications in The Quibbler. While locked up in Malfoy Manor, Luna befriended the old wandmaker Ollivander and yet another friend of Harry’s (and ex of Ginny’s), Dean Thomas. She spent her time in captivity informing the other prisoners of the existence of Wrackspurts, enlightening them on the Ministry’s use of sparkling vampire agents, and doing whatever she could to keep them together. In the meantime, Xenophilius made a deal with the Death Eaters: give them Harry Potter and they’d free Luna. Unfortunately for him, he was discovered by the Trio, and everything went horribly wrong. Of course. After a brief skirmish Xenophilus decided not to betray Harry and was sent to Azkaban in his daughter’s stead.

As luck would have it, though, Harry Potter was soon brought in for a whole ‘nother reason. And, along with Ron, trapped with Mr. Ollivander, Dean and Luna. But the reunion was very short-lived. Sure, she was pleased to see her friends, and they were glad to see she hadn’t been killed or carted off to Azkaban... but Hermione was being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange and they could nothing to stop it. At least not until the sudden surprise of a very brave house elf. Thanks to his inherit magic, Dobby was able to bring Luna and the others to safety... at the cost of his life. After the dust had cleared, and Harry had dug the grave, Luna gave the euology.

She spent the rest of her “vacation” at the Cottage until it was time to go back to Hogwarts, where soon she would assist Harry in finding (and destroying) one of the items needed to defeat Voldemort once and for all -- the lost diadem of Ravenclaw. The pair snuck into the Ravenclaw common room where they were confronted by one of the Carrows, two twin “professors” of Voldemort’s. Who Luna promptly stunned -- and pretty well for her first time. Then soon, the Battle of Hogwarts began. In the ensuing fight, Luna joined Ginny and Hermione in fighting against Bellatrix Lestrange, before Bellatrix was killed by Molly Weasley.

After the dust had cleared and the fight was finally over for good, Luna did one last favor for Harry. (That we know of, anyway.) Providing a distraction so that he, Ron and Hermione could celebrate their well-earned victory in peace. Now that the war was over, she spent what little was left of sixth year waiting for her father to return from Azkaban.

She would graduate from Hogwarts a year later and go on to become a wizarding naturalist (aka magizoologist). A famous one at that, known for discovering and classifying many new species. Sadly, this does not include the Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. Indeed, as the years went by, Luna learned to be a bit more skeptical. Though she never quite lost her ability to believe.

Of her friends, Luna was the last to marry, falling in love with fellow magizoologist Rolf Scamander. The two had twin boys, Lorcan and Lysander.

PERSONALITY:

The first thing you’ll notice about Luna is that she’s, well, a bit off. It’s hard not to notice with her odd beliefs, even odder sense of style, and awkward mannerisms. And that’s before she starts spouting off conspiracy theories and regaling you wit tales of things that don’t exist.

Underneath the kooky exterior, however, is a very sharp mind. She was sorted into Ravenclaw for a reason, after all. Yes, she’ll believe ten impossible things before breakfast, but she’s not stupid. Luna is very observant of the little details - like when she identifies Polyjucied!Harry - and seems to have been brought up to value knowledge and education. She also has a creative streak, as shown in hats and paintings of her friends. Where she’s most perceptive, however, is when it comes to people. Her observations on Ron are dead on (if not tactful), she knows Harry needs to be with his friends at the end of DH, etc. Similarly, she has a real talent for comforting and cheering up others. It’s her who sympathizes with Harry after Sirius’s death, who stays by Ginny’s side when she’s injured in the Ministry attack, who offers Hermione a shoulder to cry on when Ron is being a jerk.

Unfortunately, that awareness doesn’t translate to having fantastic social skills. At times it can be hard to tell if she’s bucking wizarding world norms or just plain isn’t aware of them. Her tendencies to be blunt, brutally honest, outspoken about her beliefs don’t help. Or that she has the same awkwardness as any non-magical teen geek. Although she’s getting a lot better. Still, for all her ability to analyze others it seems she’s not so great at self-analysis. Her relationship with Hermione is the best example. Despite all her criticism of Hermione’s “close mindedness”, Luna can be just as stubborn about her beliefs as Hermione is about her facts.

Another important thing about Luna is that she’s lonely. It’s not quite a sentiment she wears on her sleeve, but it’s there, and comes out in little ways. Her surprise when Harry calls her a friend, for example, or her quiet acceptance of her bullying. Aside from Ginny she didn’t really have any friends until she got involved in the DA. Therefore, she’s extremely loyal to the few friends she does have.

POWERS:

Magic!

Luna can perform wandless magic if she has to, but like most witches and wizards in Potterverse, she does a better job with a wand. As for the specifics...

Wand: At this point, Luna is using her second wand, which is gift from Mr. Ollivander.
Patronus: A spell to defend against Dementors. Luna’s takes the shape of a hare.
Magical Hat... Creation?: Not sure what to call this, but basically, Luna can create enchanted hats. During her time at Hogwarts, she made two, both Quidditch related: a roaring lion hat to cheer on Gryffindor and a eagle to cheer on Ravenclaw.

Invisible Thing Spotting Spectrespecs!

She won’t know it at first, but Luna’s dear Spectrespecs have gotten a bit of a boost from the Porter. Now she can see much more than Wrackspurts: she can see invisible things. This can include hidden objects or secret spells or even intangible things such as souls or auras. It’s a finicky, though, and won’t always work. After all, it’s not what Spectrespecs were designed to do.

[ Hey, City, say hello to the pair of big gray bug-eyes staring at you! They seem to be framed by something pink and a pair of radish shaped earrings. Oh, and they’re all accompanied by a tiny frown and a disembodied, dreamy voice. ]

My Spectrespecs don’t seem to be working... I suppose the Ministry’s disabled them, as they don’t want anyone seeing the things they’ve kept hidden.

[ She sighs, causing the earrings to sway slightly. ]

Although if anyone can hear me, I would very much like to find out how I got here. And, while this is all very interesting, I would also like to know how to leave. If Daddy finds out I’ve gone missing again, he’ll be very upset.

[ She’s quiet for a moment. Then that tiny frown transforms into a big, determined smile. With a flick of her finger, the pink whatever comes down, revealing what must be some kind of very decorative 3D glasses.

She skips back to the Porter, long straggly blonde locks swinging behind her, not to seeming to notice that she’s still being filmed -- all attention on the machine now, pacing around and peering at it. Or maybe she just doesn’t care. ]

She slipped off her shoes, savoring the sound and feel of the leaves being crushed under her feet. It was her choice to go barefoot now -- no one had stolen her things this year, she realized with faint surprise.

Which was for the best, really, as they wouldn’t have appreciated finding the meat (raw and quivering) she handed to the baby Thestrals. Though it had almost been fun those first two years at Hogwarts. Like a surprise game of hide and go seek.

Those months in Malfoy Manor had taken some of the fun out of hiding.

Luna closed her eyes. Inhaled as much of the cold, sharp air as she could. Began squirming, then giggling, as the Thestrals started to lick her fingers.

But it was the sound of someone else’s laughter that opened her eyes. Ginny. It was the first time she’d seen her smile in a while.

She ran up to her friend (her friends) and they exchanged some words. Something about almost missing the train, something about forgetting shoes, how Luna never warned her how odd those horse-bird things looked, how sweet those horse-bird things were really, well the little ones are kind of cute aren’t they...

Then there was silence. Ginny’s smile softened until it wasn’t a smile at all, and Luna impulsively grabbed her hand, hoping would say everything that couldn’t be said.

After all, she thought as they ran through the forest (with one shoe on in her case), McGonagall might murder them for being late. She was part-sphnix, of course, and they had terrible tempers.
