T'is the season...

Dec 31, 2006 14:53

It's the end of the year, so time to jump on the review of the year bandwagon. I'll probably do one of the 2006 memes next week when I'm back at work but for now a three word and four punctuation mark review of 2006 ( Read more... )

Have you read any Dashiell Hammett? I've just been watching the Thin Man movies and love them. This would not be a recommendation per se since I haven't actually read the books, but he might be right up your street. An author I actually have read is Carl Hiaasen, which was fun in a pulpy kind of way. If you have read them already, disregard!

Your link above to 2006 books doesn't work, by the way! I looked at your main list on your journal though.

Thanks, that should be fixed now.

I haven't read any Dashiell Hammett and I'll definitely add him to the list of authors to try next year. I have read quite a few Carl Hiaasen and think he's great.

That's a painfully large number of books!

That's an impressive amount of books! I feel completely and utterly ashamed at my abysmally low total of books read (I think it's 19, oh the shame!). My favourite re-read of the year was 'Still Life With Woodpecker' by Tom Robbins.

I really like David Baddiel, his novels are very funny. Sarah Dunant and Philippa Gregory.

Well you did move to Greece this year, that will have taken up just a small amount of time! *grin*

I think I have a Tom Robbins on my shelf waiting to be read.

John Sandford - which is something you can sort out when you come over!

There'll be a couple more new authors for you, but they're your Christmas pressie so I'm not telling!

Will be calling Air Canada from work on Tuesday, so I'll let you know when the flights are re-booked.

Can you also let me know when you post the calendars (did I give you the address?) so I can tee up Mr TD to give out instructions.

Yes you did and yes I will. It'll be the weekend, most likely as I'll need to take it to a post office and there isn't one convenient to my office.

Potential recommendations:
More Dennis Lehane! About the only one of his I haven't read is Mystic River.
Lee Child - my Mother recommended these to me. Crime-type stuff with an ex-military drifter hero. Very readable.

I will think on this & see if I can come up with anything else. D is finally in the mood to watch LOST & I'm not going to footle around on Lj whilst it's on!

I've read everything Dennis Lehane's written. I'm a huge fan. I can recommend both the book and film of Mystic River, it's one of the best of the non-Kenzie/Gennaro books in my oh-so-humble opinion.

I've read one Lee Child and I remember enjoying it, silenttex is a fan so there's plenty about the house to read.

Ok, had a bit more of a think about book recommendations. I rarely get to recommend books 'cos most people I know read SF, and they all know more about it than I do! Most of the crime fiction I read is police procedural or Private Investigator. This list is from going through our bookcases - there are bound to be others I read and enjoy but don't own, and I have terrible trouble remembering authors unless they're right in front of me ( ... )

Ooh thanks! A lot of those I've already read (Sue Grafton, Patricia Cornwell - by the way have you read Kathy Reichs, similar to Cornwell but much better, Michael Marshall, PD James - don't particularly care for her, Ed McBain, Laurie R King) but there's plenty there I haven't.

My dad was recommending the JD Robb books to me and either he or trampledamage have recommended Carol O'Connell to me so I'll definitely keep an eye out for those and I don't think I'll be allowed to leave Canada before I've read at least one John Sandford!

Kinky Friedman I definitely need to try, he sounds fab (plus I remember reading about him when he was running for office last year). Sounds similar to Carl Hiaasen.
