Part 7 “Do you want something to drink? Some ice cream? Anything?” Kris asked nervously, and Adam laughed, shaking his head.
“No, thanks,” Adam said. “You’re such a good host, Kris.”
“I try,” Kris replied, chuckling slightly. “I just… I don’t want this to be any more awkward than it has to be.”
“I know. But you really think ice cream can do the trick?” Adam raised his eyebrows, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
“I don’t know. You always said ice cream can do wonders,” Kris shrugged, his stomach queasy. He really was so scared to talk to Adam. To finally talk to him. But he knew that it had to be done. He just wished he could do something to make the whole thing less difficult.
“Hmm… I don’t think it’ll help, unfortunately. It was worth a shot, though,” Adam chuckled, taking a seat on Kris’s couch. He patted the space next to him. “Take a seat, my man. Time to get down to business.” Kris tried to laugh, but he just couldn’t. His heart was pounding crazily against his ribs and he felt sick.
Kris sat down beside Adam, and they looked at each other for a moment. Kris noticed that Adam looked just as scared as Kris felt, despite the fact that he was acting so calm about the whole thing. But this was one road that Kris didn’t want to go down again. He just wished that they could pretend like it never happened, like it wasn’t even an issue. But it was pretty much the biggest issue that they had, and if their friendship was ever going to be even remotely the same as it had been before, they’d have to talk about it. Kris was scared that it would turn into a fight and things would just fall apart again, but he was going to try hard to just see things from Adam’s point of view and stay calm and, hopefully, get some answers. Because he still wasn’t sure about some things, and he needed those answers to move on.
Adam let out a puff of air, smiling at Kris. “Alright. So, where should we start?”
“Uh… I don’t know. I guess… um… I should start by saying that I’m sorry. And that everything I did was really shitty and… yeah…” Kris rambled, feeling his cheeks heat up. Adam giggled.
“Well, let me just say that I forgive you completely, and yes, you did act like a little shit. But that’s okay, because I did too. And I’m so sorry for everything. Everyday since everything happened I… I just think about you and what I did and I just feel like such an asshole. You never deserved what I did to you,” Adam said, remorseful.
“But I did deserve it. I fucking punched you. I was an idiot,” Kris replied.
“A drunken idiot. Don’t forget that. You weren’t in the right frame of mind. I’m pretty sure I’ve done worse when I was drunk, so honestly, that’s not the part that bugs me the most,” Adam started. “What still gets me is the fact that you were even drunk in the first place. I know you were struggling and you just wanted out and I get that, but you’re smart, Kris. You know better. I just… I feel like I had this view of you, the way that you are, and when I saw you like that, it just changed. I guess I saw you as Mr. Perfect, the guy who can never fuck up, and you kind of did. I guess that’s just what hurts me the most. I never expected it from you.”
“That’s a little unfair that you had me pegged like that,” Kris said, feeling kind of disappointed that Adam had put him on such a pedestal. “You, of all people, should know that labeling is just stupid. I’m not perfect. Far from it. It just sucks that you’d put me on a pedestal. I may be Christian but I’m not a golden boy, or whatever you want to call me. Oh, and I’ve never, ever done that whole binge drinking thing again. And I never will. It was the biggest mistake of my life. I know that it doesn’t solve anything, it just makes things worse.”
“I’m glad to hear that, Kris. I’m proud of you. And you’re right about the pedestal thing. I guess it’s just, in my eyes, you could never screw up. Maybe it was unfair of me to put you on that level because you were bound to disappoint me. So I’m sorry for that,” Adam replied.
“It’s okay. I guess I did that with you too. When you said all that stuff to me, I never expected that. I thought that was beneath you. You had to have had a reason, right?” Kris asked. As the words left his mouth, Adam tensed. Kris swallowed hard, regretting bringing it up now. But it had to be said, and he hated to make Adam uncomfortable, but that was just too bad. Kris wanted to know what possessed Adam to say those things to him in the first place.
“I did. I had a reason,” Adam finally answered, picking at his nail polish. Kris wanted to tell him to stop but he didn’t feel it was appropriate when they were having a serious conversation. Kris waited for Adam to elaborate, and when he didn’t, Kris spoke up.
“Okay. What was it?” Kris prodded, his eyebrows rising slightly. “I promise I won’t judge you or anything. It’s in the past. I just want to understand why you did it.”
“You’ll think I’m the biggest ass in the world if I tell you. I can’t tell you, Kris. I acted so stupidly. I never should’ve let him push me around,” Adam muttered.
“Let who push you around? What are you talking about, man?” Kris asked. He really just wanted to know, and Adam was beating around the bush. It was kind of annoying Kris, but he was trying to remain calm. He didn’t want to fight.
“Fuck, Kris. Who do you think? He was jealous and I just, I freaked. I didn’t want to lose him, but I didn’t want to lose you either. But, I don’t know, I just figured since you had Katy and I had nobody, I needed someone. I needed him. So I got rid of you, just like he wanted,” Adam said, his voice panicky.
Kris tensed, finally starting to put two and two together. He couldn’t believe what Adam was saying. “What? Are you… Ben asked you to do that? And you actually listened to him?” Kris asked, the breath pretty much knocked out of him.
“Kris, I’m so sorry! I know… I’m such an idiot. I didn’t want to be alone. He said he would leave me if I didn’t get rid of you! I was scared,” Adam replied, trying to defend himself.
“You wouldn’t have been alone, you goof! I would have been there,” Kris said, shaking his head. “You would never have been alone because I would have been there for you. Always.”
“Not in that way…” Adam mumbled. Kris almost couldn’t hear what Adam had said. But he heard it, and Kris finally understood. He finally got it. All those looks Adam would give him. Those looks of… well, Kris never knew what the emotion was behind them. But he finally understood now. Adam had wanted to be with him.
“Adam, oh my God. I… seriously, dude, I’m so freaking sorry. Holy crap. I… wow, I’m dumb,” Kris struggled to say something, anything that could make this revelation less awkward. But there wasn’t really anything he could say. Adam was shaking his head.
“Don’t be sorry. It’s… it’s my fault. I’m just surprised you didn’t see it sooner,” Adam chuckled nervously.
“Honestly, man, I thought you were kidding. I know you confessed that you thought I was cute but cute doesn’t necessarily imply having feelings. I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have made it out to be a joke if I knew you were serious,” Kris said, feeling terrible for just disregarding the feelings that Adam had had for him.
“I’m glad you took it as a joke. I immediately regretted saying that because I knew it would probably freak you out. I was so embarrassed,” Adam muttered.
“I know you were. But I just thought… I don’t know. I’m sorry I was so insensitive. Do you want to talk about it? When… how long?” Kris started, but he saw that uncomfortable look on Adam’s face and he stopped talking. He didn’t want to make this even more embarrassing for Adam.
Adam cleared his throat, and smiled slightly at Kris. “Look, we don’t have to talk about it. It’s weird, even for me. Just so you know though, I totally understand if you’re freaked out. And you don’t have to worry about it, okay? Because I totally promise you that I don’t feel that way anymore,” Adam said. Kris tried to ignore the fact that when Adam said that he no longer had feelings for him, his stomach dropped and he felt a little disappointed. Actually, a lot disappointed.
“No, I’m not freaked out. Of course you don’t feel that way anymore… you have Ben now…” Kris justified, feeling his heart sink a little bit more. He looked up at Adam, and Adam just nodded.
“Yup, you’re right,” Adam replied quietly. He didn’t seem like he really agreed, though, Kris mused.
“Anyways…” Adam began, chuckling. “We kind of got off track. I guess I just want to tell you that I forgive you for everything. And I hope you forgive me, too. I’m over holding grudges and I’m over doing horrible things to people that I really care about just because other people are jealous. I know you might find it hard to trust me but I promise, I swear to you that I will never do this to you again.”
“I know you won’t,” Kris smiled, and he meant it with all his heart. He really did believe that Adam wasn’t going to hurt him again, and he really believed that he wouldn’t hurt Adam again, either. “I forgive you, too. I’m just ready to put this behind me and move on. Mostly I just want to fix things with you. I hope we can.”
“Of course we can!” Adam exclaimed, his eyes going wide, his smile exuberant. Kris grinned, because Adam was just such a dork. It was pretty much the funniest thing Kris had ever seen, how Adam could turn on the sexy and the fierceness one minute, and the next he was acting like a complete nut job. Kris was just, plain and simple, fascinated by Adam. Adam never ceased to amaze Kris. Kris didn’t want Adam to run out of surprises, either. And Kris was sure he wouldn’t. Adam was just too damn exciting.
“Good. I’m glad you’re back, Adam,” Kris grinned as he patted Adam’s knee affectionately. “I really missed you.”
“Glad to be back. I missed you more,” Adam giggled, poking Kris lightly in the side.
“I doubt it,” Kris said quietly, blushing.
“Awwwwww!” Adam cooed. “Someone loves his Adam!”
“Oh, shut up,” Kris muttered, tucking his chin, trying to hide his red cheeks.
“Well, if it’s any consolation, I love you too. Lots and lots and lots!” Adam squealed, purposely trying to sound like an obsessed little girl. Kris laughed.
“You’re fucked, man,” Kris smirked.
“Maybe, but that’s why we get along so well. We’re both screwed up,” Adam winked. And Kris knew it was true.
“So is there anything else you wanted to talk about? I feel like we resolved this way too quickly,” Adam laughed, combing a hand through his hair. Kris tried not to stare as Adam closed his eyes and played with his hair, a small smile on his face. Kris loved these quiet moments with Adam when they were just relaxing, whispering to each other. He didn’t really realize until that moment, watching Adam sit there with that content smile on his face, just how much he had missed him.
“I think we’ve covered it all. Basically I was a stupid drunk and you were a stupid pushover and we’ve both promised not to act like that ever again. Oh, and you used to be warm for Kristopher’s form,” Kris smirked, and Adam smirked back, not ashamed. Kris found that really endearing. Adam was proud of his feelings for Kris. Kris was kind of honoured to have been the object of Adam’s affection.
“Yup, I think you got it all,” Adam chuckled. “So, now what?”
“Hmm… I don’t know. What do you want to do?” Kris asked, trying to accommodate his guest.
“I don’t know… I have a few ideas,” Adam winked, and Kris was well aware of what he was insinuating. Kris blushed, but for some reason, the idea of doing something like that with Adam made his heart pick up speed.
“Very funny…” Kris muttered, stuffing his hands into his pockets, looking for a distraction. “Well, what do you usually do on a Saturday night?”
“Depends on my mood,” Adam replied, sinking down into the couch. As Adam got comfortable, his leg bumped against Kris’s, and Kris’s leg felt like it was on fire. In a good way, of course.
“Well, what kind of mood are you in?” Kris asked.
“A happy one,” Adam smiled. Kris grinned back because he was feeling the exact same way. He was so happy to have finally talked to Adam about what had happened. They both forgave each other, and Kris felt a little bad because the conversation went so well. He figured there would at least be a little fight. But there hadn’t been. Things were perfect between them, and it was kind of awesome, but kind of weird at the same time, too. When had things ever been perfect in Kris’s life? Uh, pretty much never.
“I have an idea. You’ll probably get your ass kicked, but you know, it’ll be awesome,” Kris grinned, hopping off the couch and over to his entertainment system, flicking on the TV and grabbing the Wii remotes from the cabinet under the TV.
“Oh no!” Adam gasped. “Wii? Really? Man, you know I’m shit at this! I have, like, the worst hand-eye coordination ever. What the hell? I thought you were supposed to be sucking up to me after all you did,” Adam joked as Kris handed him one of the remotes.
“Nah, I’m not sucking up. Sorry,” Kris grinned, putting the sports game into the system and waiting for the game to load.
“You will be sucking, eventually,” Adam giggled.
“Eww! Adam!” Kris laughed. “You’re so gross!”
“You’ll see, Allen. You’ll see…” Adam muttered to himself, and Kris just kept on laughing. Adam really was a perv, but he was the best friend he had, and he kind of enjoyed the pervy-ness anyways.
The boys played Wii for a few hours, and of course, Kris kicked Adam’s ass. Adam complained, but Kris just said that it wasn’t his fault that Adam was shitty at sports in real life and in video games, too. Adam pretended to be offended, and they joked around for a little while until Adam finally said that he should probably call it a night and get home. Kris felt disappointed but he knew that Adam would have to leave at some point. Kris was kind of scared to let Adam go, afraid that they wouldn’t speak for days after this. Kris didn’t want to go another day without at least talking to Adam.
“Promise you won’t just drop off the face of the earth and never call me or visit. Promise me you’ll come over again tomorrow, or in the next few days. It doesn’t matter when, but it’d better be soon, okay?” Kris said as Adam was putting on his shoes. Adam chuckled and pulled Kris into a hug. Kris put his head in the crook of Adam’s neck and Adam put his head on Kris’s.
“I promise. I’m not losing you again,” Adam whispered into Kris’s ear as they hugged. Then, they pulled apart, and Kris watched Adam walk to his car and drive off into the distance.
Kris locked the door, all the while, a small smile on his face. He had a shower, brushed his teeth, and hopped into bed. As he checked his phone before going to sleep, he saw that he had a text message from Adam.
night, kris. sleep tight. call u tmrw, promise.
Kris opened a new message, and replied to Adam’s. Then, he sent it, feeling content.
goodnight. i can’t w8. :)
Putting his phone on the night side table, Kris sighed. He felt so complete, so happy. He was already counting down the hours until he could speak to Adam again. Kris closed his eyes, that smile never leaving his face. And just as soon as his head hit the pillow, he was fast asleep.
