We told the doc this morning - palliative care only. No more waking her up to take vitals, no more damn finger sticks for blood sugar, no more transfusions. Just morphine and Atavan for discomfort and fear.

In brief
My mom's not going to regain full lucidity. The NG tube is painful to put in, and irritating once in.. she's not lucid enough to keep from pulling it out, which means the only way to prevent her from doing so would be restraints. No way in hell.

Random cynical observation #4,362
The standard crud catcher in a bathtub has holes that are much too big. The people who install standard plumbing fixtures are the same ones that get work when the plumbing backs up because it's full of crud. -
Ugh.
My plans have changed. I'm staying in Waltham for the foreseeable future. My mom's condition has changed again. Not imminent-kickoff change, but things are once again more serious, and the doc said when asked that it would be better if I stayed. So I am.

I just finished a long letter praising the resident who was attending my mom to the director of medicine at her hospital. She earned the praise; I hope it serves her as well as she served my mom and family. -
La poopedissima
I went contra dancing tonight, on far too little sleep. The band, Big Bandemonium, was friggin' awesome, and my blistered feet are burning. Man did I need that. I ran in to pamelina there; it was great to see her, and we talked about visiting while I'm in town. -
In brief
Blimix was my self-appointed guardian angel through an emotional shitstorm of epic proportions. He left when the weather cleared; I remain, unable to adequately express how grateful I am for his help. My mom continues to get better. What a difference a day makes.
Yesterday after I posted, I went to the hospital to see my mom, who was much clearer-headed than I'd seen her in a while. She greeted me by saying "Goodbye, Karen." It sounded very purposeful, and for the rest of our visit, she responded to me clearly and appropriately - following the conversation and making perfect sense. I was left thinking ( Read more... ) -
Yay sleep. And my friends.
Yesterday, I made all the phone calls to let people who love my mom know what's going on. Not fun. Thankfully, my friends blimix and Derek met me at the hospital in the morning. Blimix is staying with me and being all-purpose wonderful. When I called the hospital this morning, they said my mom had had a good night. Rest is good; I got the first full ( Read more... )
