Chapter 9 (Final)
"Is it too much to ask for you to stay tonight?"
Seira stopped peeling the apple and looked at Ainosuke.
She slowly shook her head, smiling.
"I'll stay." She said.
"Thank you..." Ainosuke breathed.
-
Seira opened the door.
He was there.
He looked at her and smiled.
A tear fell.
Seira was so relieved. He was okay.
Seira made her way to his bed.
Ainosuke frowned as he saw her.
"You've been crying." He said. "I'm sorry."
She shook her head.
"I'm okay." He continued saying, smiling at her reassuringly.
Seira felt a twinge. Why was Ainosuke the one doing the comforting?
She shook her head more vigoroudsly and this time smiled brightly at him.
"Yokatta..." She said.
"Un." He nodded.
The door opened once again and in entered Shuhei.
He walked very slowly, his face somber.
Ainosuke looked at him. "What is it?"
"Well, the doctor said you need to stay in the hospital." It was Shioya who answered.
"Oh..." Ainosuke said, frowning.
Ainosuke turned back to Shuhei.
He still had that fierce but sad look.
"Ai-chan... it might be difficult from now on..." He said.
Ainosuke nodded. "What did sensei said?"
"Well, I understand what he said but it's rather difficult to explain it." Shuhei said, laughing a bit. "He said he'll be back in a bit to explain it to you."
Ainosuke smiled at the attempted humor and nodded.
Shuhei turned to Seira. "Seira-san, can you stay for a bit as well?" he asked.
"I'll stay." She said.
Just then, the door opened.
"Ainii!"
"We only just heard-"
"Aoi-chan, Toru..." Ainosuke said, grinning.
-
His hand moved, searching blindly. Seira seized his hand.
Blank black eyes stared right at her, unseeing.
He smiled.
"Seira."
"I'm here."
"I wish I could see you." he said, tightening his grip on her hand.
Seira wanted to cry.
-
'Recurrent eye cancer...' Chris sighed as he looked at the scene in front of him.
Seira was preparing the cake they had brought for Ainosuke and Ainosuke was watching her silently, smiling all the while.
It was really unfair.
Seira... he could tell she really loved him. And it was the same for Ainosuke. They love each other dearly.
'The survival rate of recurrent stage of eye cancer is very low.' That was what he had read. It was said that this is because the malignant tumor is possibly immune to the treatment the patient had already undergone.
He numbly took the piece of cake Seira had cut for him and watched as she gave Ainosuke's share as well.
Truly, the scene in front of him was very beautiful, yet it was very tragic as well.
Seira had lost her father, just a few months ago she had lost Kaito. And now this... It was just too cruel.
"Umai!" Ainosuke said like a kid.
Seira smiled very brightly.
'But Ainosuke's case is unique.' This thought had been stuck in Chris' head. 'Ainosuke had undergone eye transplant, but they hadn't detected tumors then, so it's possible that in that time, they were still inactive. They were removed with Ainosuke's left eye. He didn't receive any treatment for cancer. So maybe...'
Chris was no doctor, so he knew he shouldn't trust his assumptions very much. But he couldn't help but hope. Hope for his sister's happiness.
There was clanking noise and Chris was snapped out of his musings.
"Ainosuke?" Seira asked in alarm. Ainosuke had dropped his fork.
"Seira.... Seira... why is it getting dark?"
Seira's eyes widen and turned to Chris, silently asking for help.
Chris stood up and pushed the call button.
"Seira..."
"Ainosuke, I'm here..."
"It's so dark."
"It's not, Ainosuke, it's still day..." Seira said weakly, fear and worry in her voice.
"Seira... I can't see you..."
-
Placing the plate and apple on the bed side table, she stood up, never letting go of Ainosuke's hand.
"Seira?"
Ainosuke felt her move; felt her weight on the hospital bed.
He moved to make space for her.
She snuggled to him, placing an arm around him.
Ainosuke turned sideways at her and smiled.
-
Masami knocked for the second time.
Still, no one answered.
She opened the door to Ainosuke's room to find the two sleeping.
Masami smiled sadly.
She had come to the hospital to bring some change of clothes for Seira.
Ainosuke's state has turned for the worst. The treatment of the tumor inflicted too much radiation in Ainosuke's eyes and now he had loss his vision.
Masami placed Seira's things by the bed.
Her heart ache when she had seen the two properly.
Seira was asleep, resting her head on Ainosuke's bed. They held hands. Their grip didn't loosen even in sleep. And it seems Ainosuke had tried to cover Seira in blanket.
Cautiously, Masami arranged the blanket around Seira.
Seira stirred but didn't wake up.
Smiling, Masami moved away silently.
She took the used clothes in one plastic, and arranged a few things that was scattered in the bedside table.
That was when she noticed the sketchpad.
It was partly opened.
Curiosity getting to her, she had took the sketchpad and opened it.
She smiled sadly.
It was Ainosuke's drawings of Seira.
All was when they were already here in the hospital.
Seira looking out the window, Seira preparing apples, Seira laughing, Seira sleeping, Seira looking up to somewhere, smiling...
But she was surprised to see the last page.
It was an incomplete drawing.
It was just Seira's face. Seira just smiling.
There were no date in this drawing like the other ones.
Masami turned a page back. Her eyes widen. The date there was the day Ainosuke loss his vision.
'He had drew Seira-san even without his sight...'
-
He reached for her face. She guided his hand.
He touched her cheeks, felt her face through his fingers and let a little chuckle.
"I can almost see you." He said.
Seira smiled at him, though he couldn't see it.
-
"Where are we going Seira?" Ainosuke asked with a little chuckle.
We're already here!" She said, guiding Ainosuke.
There was a bark.
Ainosuke turned to Seira. Well, at least to where her hand was coming from.
He grinned.
Seira smiled at that.
"Rin missed you." Shuhei said. Rin was excitedly pulling him towards the two.
Rin whimpered as she tried to tackle Ainosuke. Shuhei stopped him.
"Rin, not so rough." Shuhei chided.
Ainosuke laughed. "It's okay, Shuhei-kun."
Ainosuke crouched down as Seira guided his hand to Rin's head.
Rin whimpered more.
"Rin, I missed you too." Ainosuke said, hugging the dog to him.
-
She snuggled more closely to him, hugging him to herself.
"I love you..." Seira said.
Ainosuke didn't reply but held her tighter.
-
They had stayed in the garden that day.
They chatted, the three of them.
They sat on a bench. Ainosuke, Seira and then Shuhei.
Rin rested her head on Ainosuke's lap while Ainosuke continued to pet her.
Shuhei kept saying stories about Ainosuke, teasing him.
Ainosuke retorted as well, saying Shuhei's embarrasing moments.
Seira kept laughing.
Shuhei started another story then and Seira looked at him, listening.
But suddenly Rin whimpered.
The two turned to her and Ainosuke.
Ainosuke was clutching at his eye again.
"Ainosuke!" The two chorused.
It seems he didn't hear them.
He gripped the first thing he could reach. Seira.
And then he collapsed.
-
"It hurts..." He said softly.
Seira closed her eyes, willing the tears to go away.
"It's weird..." He continued saying.
Seira looked at him. "What's weird?" She asked in a soft voice.
Ainosuke smiled, humorlessly.
"I have tumor in my eyes... but it's weird. It doesn't hurt here." He said, placing one hand on top of his eyes. "Instead, it hurts right here." He moved his hand to his chest. "...in my heart."
"You're going to be okay." Seira said firmly.
"I'm sorry..."
"No! You'll be okay!" She repeated.
"Seira..."
And now Seira was crying freely.
"Don't give up, please! At least try... for me."
Ainosuke shush her and held her close once more. But he never responded to what she said.
-
"He needs an operation as soon as possible. The chances of survival isn't very high, but it will be too late if we don't take action now."
-
Seira stared at the OR's door.
Ainosuke was there.
She wished she was there as well.
She felt very numb.
She can barely feel Chris' hand on her shoulders.
Barely hear Toru's insistent reassurances to his little sister.
Shuhei was also besides her, his eyes cast down as if he couldn't bare to look.
They were all waiting for him.
-
It was the night just before Ainosuke loss his sight.
Seira had come down to the hospital cafeteria to buy herself a coffee.
She had panicked when she had returned to Ainosuke's room to find an empty bed.
She checked the toilet but he wasn't there.
She was about to call the nurse when she had glimpse the night sky.
The moon was full.
She knew at once where he was.
She made her way to the hospital rooftop.
He was there. She sighed in relief.
He was sitting on the bench, looking up at the sky, his sketchpad on his hand.
Seira smiled and made her way to him.
Ainosuke heard her footspteps and turned to her.
He smiled when he saw her.
"Don't leave like that." She said when she was near enough.
"Sorry..." He said sheepishly.
Seira shook her head. "Just don't do it again." She said.
"Her fault." He said, pointing at the moon.
Seira giggled at that.
"It is a beautiful sight." She said looking up.
"Un. Just like that time, ne?" He said, looking up as well.
They quietly gazed at the night sky. It was very beautiful; the full moon and the stars scattered, shining brightly.
"Aren't you cold?" Seira asked after a while, looking at Ainosuke.
"A bit." He said, honestly.
"Well, let's get back now." Seira said and she made to stand up.
Ainosuke held her in her place.
"Let's stay for a bit more." He said.
"But Ainosuke..."
He placed an arm around her and grinned playfully. "You can keep me warm."
Seira shook her head in exasperation but smile all the same.
"I miss Rin." Ainosuke said after another moment.
"I'm sure she misses you too." Seira said.
Ainosuke smiled and held her more tighter, placing his other arm around her as well so he was now facing her.
"Ainosuke?"
And then he dipped his lips on to hers.
-
The door to the operating room opened.
Seira's heart pounded.
The doctors came out. She couldn't make out the expression on their faces.
They stood up, and approched them. Seira could feel Chris' hand holding hers.
The doctor spoke.
It was as if it was in slow motion.
Seira burst out crying as Chris held her.
---
A year had passed.
Seira walked through the semetery, a smile on her face.
She stopped in front of his grave and laid the flowers she had brought.
It was his seventh death anniversary.
She heard Rin barked and she looked back.
She laughed at the sight. Rin was trying to get the food they had brought.
"Cut it out, Rin."
Seira moved closer to them and took a piece of onigiri and gave it to Rin.
"You're really spoiling her."
She grinned. "It's just one piece." Seira said, laughing a bit.
Seira took his hand and guide him to where her father's grave was.
They had both offered a prayer for him.
"Daddy, here he is." Seira said brightly and looked at him.
-
"The operation was a success."
Seira burst out crying, Chris holding her. She was so relieved.
Ainosuke wasn't leaving her.
Ainosuke is okay.
"But..." The doctor started and Seira looked up sharply.
-
He smiled; his blue eyes looking nowhere, seeing nothing. Lifeless eyes, his prosthetic eyes.
-
"His eyes was too damaged, furthermore the tumor had spread throughout his cornea and retina." The doctor said somberly.
"You mean..?" It was Shuhei who asked.
"I'm afraid to say that it would be impossible for him to regain his vision."
-
Seira was brought out from her reverie when Ainosuke yelped.
"Rin!" Seira said, quickly standing up and trying to pull away Rin who has tackled Ainosuke.
When Rin finally got off Ainosuke, he still just lied there on the grass. He sighed, in surrender it seems. Impossibly, Rin had become more hyper after he had come back from the hospital.
Seira tried not to laugh.
Ainosuke pouted though, hearing her stifled giggle. His hearing had become sharper after he had lost his sight.
Blue, lifeless eyes stared blankly to her.
Seira smiled as she sat back down, and then lied besides Ainosuke.
His hand found his way to hers. He held it tightly.
"Seira..." He said softly. He didn't have anything to say to her. He just wanted to say her name.
He could never look at her again, she could never see that twinkle in his eye again.
But it was such a small price to pay.
End
AN:
-couldn't bear to kill ainosuke, i hope you agree.
-usually, as long as the tumor is removed, cancer patients can go back to their normal lives. i don't know much about eye cancer, though. but maybe as long as the tumor didn't spread to other organs...
-prosthetic eyes- eye replacement. it's non-functional though, so no vision.
-RANDOM: btw, if i have to give theme song for this fic, it would be "Looking Through Your Eyes" by Andrea Corr and Bryan White. lol, i know, it's supposed to be "Code" but if this was a drama. Code would be opening theme, and Looking Through Your Eyes would be the ending theme. /whacked.
Thanks so much for reading til the end!
