Recap:
“Kago-san,” Ryuu started, he decided to drop all pretences, “actually, I did not come here to do research for school.”
Kago-san looked at him, perplexed.
“The truth is, I found a doll that looks exactly like Princess Sayumi. The doll also has the name ‘Sayumi’ written on it on its left leg. The doll is...”
Ryuu felt stupid. How was he to say that Enna was alive?
“Well, she’s special...” he said lamely.
He looked at Kago-san and was surprised to see him stock still.
“Kago-san?” he called cautiously.
This seems to rouse the old man.
“A doll, you say...” he said. “My child, can I see this doll?”
“Sure... My little sister has her, I’ll call her...” Ryuu said, bewildered at the old man’s behaviour.
CHAPTER 13
Ryuu was now inside the Kago household. Kago-san had stopped him from dashing off to find Natsune and Enna and instead called a helper to do in Ryuu’s stead. He had then invited Ryuu inside his house where he said he would introduce his wife, Kago Ai-san.
It was a traditional house, as expected of a house near a shrine.
‘And the residents are technically royalty, too.’ He thought.
The fusuma opened and Kago-san returned to the room.
“My wife would be coming in a while.” He said. “She is with my granddaughter at the moment.”
Ryuu nodded.
“This doll...” Kago-san spoke once more as he sat in front of Ryuu.
“You told me it is special... where did you get it if I may ask?”
“An old doll shop.” Ryuu answered. “they sell antique dolls. I bought the doll during Hina Matsuri...”
Kago-san nodded and then he looked at Ryuu hard and long.
It was as if he was sizing him up.
And then he smiled, though Ryuu did not feel that he was cheerful... The smile was as if recognition of something...
“My boy, can I let you in on a secret?” he asked Ryuu.
Ryuu didn’t know what to say and so just bow as a sign of accord.
“The Princess Sayumi has survived.” He said without preamble.
“Eh?” Ryuu uttered, shocked.
Kago-san smiled at him, “Yes... this is the first time I am sharing this to anyone. In fact, the only ones who know about this are you and me. I have hidden this little fact to the whole of Japan and even to my family. Even to my wife, the princess, herself.”
“Y-you’re wife is... the princess?”
Kago-san nodded. “I am old, and I am tired of lying. Yes, my wife is the lost princess herself. There has been an inquiry. They have done tests to discover if my wife is the princess. But fortunately, technology then hasn’t grown. They had only proven that she was a descendant but it was not enough to prove that she was indeed the lost princess.”
“But she is?”
Kago-san nodded once more. “She had forgotten about everything after that dreadful night. I... I was a kitchen boy at the royal house. We were friends. She was not like the other imperial children, proud and haughty. She was very humble and she did not see her servants as mere tools but as human beings. I was there that night. I was in the kitchen when I heard two men talking about the plan. They did not notice me for I was very small. Unfortunately, the plan was already in operation. The family was already dressed and was gathering in the i-ma.”
Kago-san paused for awhile. He has a blank face on, as if he was lost in his own memory.
“I was watching them and then Sayu gasped. She told her older sister that she needed to go back to their room for she had left the doll their father has given her. Princess Eri scolded her but allowed her to go back. That was when I get the chance to warn her. I went to their room and waited for her there. She smiled when she saw me and asked me to come with them. I told her what I’d heard. She was scared. She took the doll and then both of us went to the i-ma to try and warn her family, too.”
Ryuu was surprised when Kago-san started tearing up.
“But it was too late. When we arrived there, the men at the back of the emperor suddenly took out a gun and pointed it at the emperor. Sayu tried to shout but I stopped her. I dragged her to the next room. The night was filled with shouts and gunfire. We saw everything that had happened. Sayu saw her family murdered in front of her. All night she cried without noise, hugging her doll to herself. She knew she needed to stay silent or else both of us would die, too.”
He paused.
“She had cried herself to sleep. The next day, I tried to wake her up but she did not steer. I was afraid. I thought she had died as well but she was breathing. I carried her out of the house. We went out through the kitchen door. No one saw us. We wondered for a while. She finally woke up after a forth night and then she could remember nothing. I never thought of the doll but it was lost during our escape.”
Kago-san looked at Ryuu then.
“This doll...If this is the princess’s doll, it might be the key for her to remember.” Kago-san said.
Ryuu looked at him.
“Lies...” Kago-san spoke once more.
“The worst lies are the lies we tell ourselves. We live in denial of what we do, even what we think. This is because we are afraid. We fear we will not find love, and when we find it we fear we'll lose it. We fear that if we do not have love we will be unhappy. But a lie is a lie. I am an old man and am quite tired of lies. I wish to be freed. And I wish Sayu would be, too.” He said meekly.
Ryuu smiled understandingly, “My onisan told me a similar thing...” he said.
The fusuma opened again and Natsune came with Enna-chan in her hands.
“Nii-chan?” she looked at Ryuu.
“Natsune-chan,” Ryuu smiled sadly at Natsune.
“What is it?” Natsune asked.
“This is Kago-san,” Ryuu introduced, “can he borrow Enna-chan for a while? He’ll just show her to his wife.” Ryuu said.
And as if on cue, the fusuma opened once more and in came an old lady.
She bowed at them and smiled amiably. The siblings bowed back while Enna-chan gasped. This did not go unnoticed by Ryuu.
‘So she’s really the princess’s doll...’
Ryuu didn’t really much find looking at the lost princess as important as what this could mean for Enna-chan.
Kago-san approached his wife and introduced their visitors.
“Ai-chan,” Kago-san said, “Our visitors wanted to show you something.”
“What is it, Sou?” she asked her husband and smiled at them graciously.
“Natsune-chan, can I borrow Enna?” Ryuu asked Natsune.
Natsune hesitantly passed Enna to Ryuu. Ryuu then approached the old lady and gave her Enna.
Kago-san’s wife looked at it curiously and reached a hand to take it but then Enna-chan gripped Ryuu’s hand and whispered something.
Ryuu turned Enna to him and looked at her. She smiled at him and then nodded at Ryuu. This was unnoticed by the other occupants of the room.
Ryuu stared at Enna-chan now very hesitant to give her to the old princess.
The princess’s hand falter but then Enna turned to her and reach her little hands. This was seen by the old princess and Kago-san.
Kago-san gasped.
And the princess gave a look of weary but then Enna smiled at the princess. The princess seems enthralled and couldn’t help but reach a hand, too.
Ryuu didn’t want to let go of Enna-chan but the look Enna gave to the princess...
It was as if she was longing... aching... it seems like she was older... On the contrary, the princess looked as if she was somehow younger... it seems like she was a child, curious but cautious of Enna-chan.
The princess took Enna-chan in her hand and Enna reached for her face. She touched cheeks and murmured two words:
“My princess...”
And then Enna glowed.
“Enna!” Natsune cried standing up and running to the princess. Ryuu was standing frozen. He did not understand what was going on... but maybe he did.
It felt... goodbye.
The doll stopped glowing and Natsune snatch her away from the princess.
“Enna-chan!” she called worried.
But she did not respond.
“Jin-kun...” the princess called. Ryuu didn’t realize Kago-san has rushed to the princess after the ordeal.
“Y-you remember? Sayu?” Kago-san asked, he was crying.
The old princess slowly nodded. She smiled but tears fell from her eyes, too.
“My father... and mother...” she sobbed. “And my oneesama and otouto...”
“I’m so sorry, Sayu.” Kago-san said as he hugged his wife.
“Nii-san!” Natsune called. “Enna! She’s not moving! She’s-“
“Gone.” Ryuu said and his voice cracked. “Natsune-chan, she’s gone.”
“No!!”
Ryuu remembered the last words she said,
“I did not want to break my promise, I never would have but... and I wanted to watch your performance with Natsune-chan.”
Natsune-chan started to cry, hugging the doll to her.
Ryuu hugged her, trying to soothe her. “This is how it’s supposed to be...” he said but Natsune just continued crying.
“This is the right thing. It was not extraordinary that she was alive. It wasn’t normal.” He said but he sounded as if he was convincing himself. But if he was honest with himself, he wasn’t. It didn’t felt right at all.
“Something remarkable has happened here.” Kago-san spoke up after a while.
He stared at the doll. “It seems that night... some part of Sayu was transferred to the doll.” He said wonderingly.
“I... That night... I was wishing I could forget. I wished I could stop hurting.” The old princess spoke up.
“That doll,” she said smiling at the doll.
“No, Enna-chan,” she corrected, “saved me. I was about to break, to lose sight of myself. She saved me.”
She sounded grateful.
Ryuu wanted to smile but he couldn’t. Not just yet.
Natsune-chan continued crying.
But then the moment is gone when a voice called, “Obasan!”
The fusuma opened again and a girl wearing a purple kimono entered the room.
“Obasan! I tried on the kimono-“ she stopped talking when she realized that there were other people in the room.
Ryuu stared at the girl, taken aback. The girl looks exactly like Enna-chan.
“Kanon-chan.” The old princess called.
But then Natsune rushed to her and hugged her. “Enna-chan!”
The girl called ‘Kanon,’ seems shock, too.
“W-who-?” she started to say but then she saw Ryuu.
“Oh my god! Ryutaro-san!” she squealed, “You’re my ichiban!”
End
AN: Cliffy. Sorry. But I do hope you liked the story. :D
-Just to clear things. The night the royal family was murdered, Princess Sayumi wished that she could forget. She was holding onto her doll and well, have you read stories like this before? Anyway her memories and some part of her were transferred into the doll and after that she couldn’t remember anything. ‘Jin’ the kitchen boy thought it best that she didn’t remember and made up a story about her past and his past... something along finding her unconcious etc... you know the drill... The doll was lost, somehow ended up in the doll shop and after years, was bought by Morimoto Ryutaro. Jin, who is now known as Kago Sou and the princess Sayumi, who is now known as ‘Ai,’ got married and had a daughter. Their daughter then married a ‘Fukuda-san’ and they also had a daughter who they named as Kanon.
- i-ma - living room
- fusuma - sliding door
-this is Kago Ai (former member of Morning Musume):
she looks like kanon, ne?
-and I used ‘Sayumi’ because of the meaning and because I like Michishige Sayumi (current member of Morning Musume):
-the fictional history is based from
Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia and
20th Century Fox’s Anastasia (1997 Animated Film)-and Yokohama cause that’s the birthplace of Mai (
crescentharpe )...
This is not really important:
My little sister’s reaction:
Mai: That’s it?! It’s a cliffy!
Macy: I know, I wrote it there.
Mai: What happens next? What about Kanon? Ryuu? Natsune? Write more chapters!
Macy: The story is about Enna, Enna is gone so the story is finish.
Mai: What about Ryuu????
Macy: The story’s title is ‘Enna-chan.’ I’ll just leave the rest to your imagination.
Mai: NO!!! Write more!!
Macy: What would I write? Enna’s gone!
Mai: Then write a sequel! Kanon-chan!!!!
-okay so my lil sis had a near-tantrum about this, but sorry this is really the end. Sorry if you didn’t like the ending... >.< (my sister actually wanted it to be like Pinocchio or something but this is my original plot, I didn’t want to deviate from it.)
EDIT: And so I gave in to my sister's harrassment pleading... here's an
