Chapter 5:
Nino felt like he had been swimming for days, but he was nowhere near the bottom of the sea. Even though he was so deep that sunlight couldn’t reach where he was, Nino was able to navigate his way thanks to Aiba’s brilliant invention that Nino had no idea how the latter managed to neither think of nor build it. According to another invention of Aiba’s, he was 20 000 feet under the sea, but there was no ground in sight.
Stopping in the middle of nowhere for a while to regain his breathe, Nino fished out a water-proof sandwich from his bag and began nibbling on it. Surprisingly, Nino wasn’t that hungry even though he had swam for so long. Once his stomach was full, Nino continued on his journey. But before he could get very far from where he stopped, a voice stopped him dead in his tracks.
“Hey! You there!” a rough voice yelled out.
Nino cringed, thinking he had been caught leaving his house red-handed, but that was until he realized he was so deep underwater that nobody could find him, unless…
Slowly, Nino turned around, only to see two men in armour approaching him. If Nino weren’t so busy trying to find an excuse as to why he was alone in the middle of nowhere, he would have noticed that those two men didn’t have legs and were riding on a giant seahorse.
“What are you doing outside the boundary?” asked the one on Nino’s left not so nicely, “you look old enough to know that everybody is forbidden to leave Atlantis, it’s dangerous out there!”
‘Atlantis?’ Nino though to himself, so the mermaid civilisation really did exist! Those two men, no wait, they had tails, so those two mermen should know where it is.
“I got lost,” said Nino stupidly.
“Lost?” repeated the other guard, turning to his partner, he sighed, “It looks like we’ll have to take him back, we could use it as an excuse to return early, this place is starting to creep me out,”
The other guard nodded. Seizing Nino’s arm in one hand, the guard whipped the sea-horse with the other. Before Nino knew it, they were speeding off at the speed of light, making him feel as if he was going to throw up at any moment.
They came to a stop as quickly as they had started off. Nino opened his eyes and took in the surroundings. His jaws fell. The great city of Atlantis was indeed true! There was a huge castle standing right in the middle of the whole thing with quaint little shop houses surrounding it. Nino felt like everything was a dream as the guard slowly pulled him to a huge clearing in the centre of several houses where a great fountain stood together with a few lamp poles.
“You can find your way home from here, kid,” said the guard, his sentence more like a statement than a question. The guards then left him there as they sped off to the castle on their seahorses, probably going to report to their superior.
Swimming off in a random direction, Nino tried not to ogle at the place. The houses were really pretty, nothing like the ones on land. But that wasn’t what he was here for - he had to find that merman with that brown spiky hair and sleepy eyes. However, it was night time at Atlantis, so the chances of Nino running into him were slim. He should find a place to rest for the night, which will probably be an alley way or something like that since he didn’t have any money on him.
Nino swam and swam, but he could not find anywhere that looked comfortable. Tired, and not to mention frustrated, it took all off Nino’s will power to not just collapse onto the spot and just go to sleep there.

Sho knew he shouldn’t be this worried. Sho knew he shouldn’t be panicking at all. Ohno was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, so there is no reason why he should worry about the latter. Sho collapsed onto the armchair, a voice in his head telling him that he knows that was not true.
Wailing, Sho thought about all the horrible stuff that could happen to Ohno because he had allowed him to leave. The prince could have been eaten up by a monster, or he could have ran out of food and died from starvation. Ohno might be captured by pirates and forced to sing for them in that adorable voice of his, maybe that was a bit improbable, but there was still a chance!
Swimming to the window, Sho tried to look for signs that Ohno might have returned. It had been nearly five days, but still no sign of Ohno. He should have reached the volcano by now, and met the great wizard. Ohno had promised that he’ll send Sho a letter if he managed to turn into a human, but he hadn’t received anything so far.
Peering out of the window, Sho squinted at the roads below, looking for a sleepy merman with a pale blue tail and a brown back-pack. Sho nearly died from excitement when his eyes spotted a lone merman swimming towards the castle with a brown bag. From his angle, he couldn’t see the head or the tail, but Sho knew it was Ohno. It had to be.
Jumping out of the window, Sho swam down, ignoring that voice in his head that told him what he was doing was very dangerous. Sho knew they were not allowed to jump down from the windows even though there was water all around as the sudden change in pressure could kill him.
Sho swam above the gates, thanking the guard for not being there at that time and headed straight to the place where he thought he saw Ohno. Soon enough, Sho came to that street and disappointment hit him right in the face. That merman he saw wasn’t Ohno, it was some random guy who had the same bag.
Sho wanted to turn around and head back to the castle, but he noticed something wrong with that merman - he looked like he was about to faint. His sense of responsibility overtook his common sense, making him dash up to the merman and supported him.
“Are you ok?” he asked.
The merman with a shiny yellow tail blinked at him before answering, “I’m fine, I just need a place to rest for the night,”
Sho looked around. There was a hotel nearby, so carrying the half-dead merman in that direction, Sho asked himself why he was so nice to a random stranger when the unknown man in his hands could very well kill him.
When he got to the hotel, Sho hauled the now unconscious merman up to the second floor where they had a spare room, and laid him on the bed.
“I think he has enough money to rent a room for the night,” said Sho to the landlady at the door, “I best be going,”
Giving the merman on the bed one last look, Sho headed back to the castle, dreading the thought of having to swim all the way up to the window as he had locked Ohno’s bedroom door.

Ohno didn’t know if he should let out a victorious cry or swim up to the boulder and hug it. He couldn’t decide, so he did both. Finally! After days of swimming, Ohno had reached the great stone wall! Excitedly, Ohno swam to the top of it, thinking that the moment he peers over the wall, he’ll see the great wizard mixing potions or testing out spells.
But when he reached the top, Ohno received the shock of his life. The great wizard wasn’t there, there wasn’t even any signs of him living there either. Ohno sighed, thinking about the wasted trip he had made. Taking a look at the piece of paper, Ohno wondered if he had deciphered the clues wrongly.
Suddenly, a low rumbling sound came from somewhere below him, shocking Ohno out of his thoughts. Cautiously, Ohno looked downwards. To the biggest shock that he had gotten in his entire life, Ohno saw that the great wall was crumbling! From the looks of the damage, the wall will not be able to withstand an eruption, and there was supposed to be one soon.
He had to turn back and warn everyone! Temporary discarding his wish to turn into a human, Ohno sped off in the direction where he had come from. However, due to his haste, Ohno completely missed something brown in front of him.
Colliding head first into something rough, Ohno winced as he felt the rough object cut his skin. Blinking to focus his vision, Ohno’s eyes widen as he noticed he had ran into a net. Panic engulfed his entire head as he fought to get out, but despite his struggles, the net refused to give way. Praying like crazy that he had something sharp in his bag, Ohno tried not to panic anymore as he felt the net rising.
Unfortunately for him, he didn’t think about packing a knife or something like that with him, and the only item he had which stood any chance of cutting the think ropes was his fork.
As the net rose higher and higher, bringing him with it, Ohno attacked the ropes with his fork. It barely made any damage on it, just loosened a few strands. Ohno bit his lips, saying goodbye to his family and Sho for he knows he’ll never see them ever again. He tried not to picture their reactions when they realized he won’t be returning.
Ohno could already see the surface, making him tremble even more. Bracing himself for whatever that was coming, Ohno closed his eyes. Soon enough, he was hanging in the air, sea water dripping everywhere.
Ohno heard voices, voices of human, humans who were looking at him. He opened his eyes, starting to feel dizzy because he was completely out of water, and stared at the humans in their boats.
He didn’t like the way they were staring him.
