A Numbers Game
The National Academy of Sciences, membership of which is one of the highest honours in American Science (think of it like Royal Society membership for the UK) has inducted just 9 women this year. 72 members in total were inducted and 18 foreign associates.
So of the new members of NAS, women make up just over 1%.

HPV and other forms of cancer.
Okay, so we all know by now that HPV, the 'genital warts' virus can cause cervical cancer - or at least 2 strains of it can. And we also know by now that there is a new vaccine on the market, Gardasil, which can immunise women against these strains of HPV. So I just had the pleasure of watching a "Global Warming Critic" appear on Jon Stewart. I was, through my usual frothing rage, rather curious to see what precisely he was going to say. There are those I know who knew her deeper than I, and loved her far more than I. I loved her though - always respected, always wanted to know. And I wish I'd moved on that sooner. Mostly, though - for all of you who loved her so deeply - I'm here, and I wish I could help more, and be closer.
