5 Chapter 6: Old pain
It’s been three months since they’ve been, what you can call, dating. Sawyer’s been having a hard time with his book and he’s become a very difficult person to be with.
Jack’s been working non-stop to avoid Sawyer and lost three of his patients even though he tried his best. They really couldn’t handle to be with each other and argued all the time.
“I’d never have thought we’ll end up like this. I thought we loved each other.” Jack says after the third fight they had in less than an hour. The first one because Sawyer wanted the car window open and Jack didn’t. The second one because Sawyer took the longest rode to Jack’s place and Jack wanted to take the highway. The last one because Sawyer parked the car under the sun and Jack would have wanted to park it under a tree so it didn’t heat up while he grabs his things from the house.
“Yeah well, you’re a pain in the ass all the time and not in the good way” Sawyer remarks.
They enter the house and continue fighting.
“I’m the pain in the ass? You’ve been moody as hell!” he looks at the blonde with irritation.
“I ain’t the one who loses a patient and blames the other one for it” explains without raising his voice one bit.
“What? I’ve never blamed you”
“You don’t huh? You get so upset that I become your punchin’ ball. You get angry at me ‘cause I’m late, ‘cause I forget a date, ‘cause I spill some wine on the table, ‘cause I come on your couch, ‘cause I breathe. You’re un-fuckin’-bearable, doc”
They are both stressed and haven’t had sex in two weeks. “I think we should …” they say at the same time.
“What?” asks Jack.
“No, you first”
“No, it’s ok, we should what?” Jack insists.
They both wait for the other one to speak, but nobody does. They look at each other and say at the same time, “We should break up” says Jack “We should live together” says Sawyer.
“What?” They say at the same time again.
“You wanna break up?” asks Sawyer incredulously.
“You want us to live together?” Jack parrots.
“Wow! Wow! Wait a minute! Break up? Such a pussy doc. We fight a few times and you can’t handle it anymore? Thought you never gave up and all”
“I’m the one to blame? You’re unbelievable! It’s obvious we can’t stand each other. Why force something that can’t be?” says sadly.
“That’s how you feel about us? I can’t believe this.” He laughs sardonically.
“If we are gonna feel miserable we don’t need to be together” Jack pathetically tries to explain.
Sawyer goes to the window and looks outside, tucking his hair behind his ear. “I want you to come and live with us” he finishes his sentence looking straight at Jack.
“Are you nuts? It’s gonna be worst” Jack fights approaching him.
“We are meant to be together, doc. We can work this out, don’t ya think?”
“I’m not sure we can”
“We just need a common grown, a place we can call our own. So we can talk about the things we like or don’t about each other. This thing we have now doesn’t work ‘cause we have to find the time to be together, one of us has to adjust to the other or vice versa and that just suck…”
Jack comes to realize how wrong he was about everything. He doesn’t say a word for a while and Sawyer doesn’t push it, he just waits because he knows.
“I’m sorry” Jack says in dismay looking at his lover. “It’s ok baby” Sawyer says kissing him on the forehead. “You doubted us, I’ve been there. I love ya anyway.”
Jack laughs and coughs all together. “You know I do too, right?”
He nods. “See? So what you say? Do I give you my key or not?”
“Yeah, I’ll like that” Jack nods like a child with a new toy.
“Good”
“Are we going to have make-up sex?” Jack wonders.
“Of course babe, I’m gonna fuck so hard you’re gonna regret havin’ doubts about us. That’ll teach ya a lesson.”
“I can’t wait” says lamely trying to sound sexy.
“Well, you’ll have to ‘cause I have to pick up Clementine. She’s at Sarah’s, a friend of her.”
“Ok, let me grab my stuff for tomorrow and some clothes and we’ll go”
“Hey, give me a kiss. I missed ya” Jack kisses him deeply and goes to his room.
Sawyer feels proud of himself. For the first time he manages to deal with the situation like a grown up.
“We should buy a new house with a bigger room for Clementine, another one for us, one office for you and one for me. A big garden with a pool and space for let say a dog! What do you think?” says Jack exasperatingly cheerful as they go to the car.
Once inside, “Look at you! You wanted to break up five minutes ago”
“I know I was… just”
“About Clem, how do you feel about her?” he says changing the topic.
“What you mean? I love her of course” says confidently.
“I know you do, but how do you feel about you know… being a father.”
“What? Are you serious?”
“Of course I’m serious.”
“It’s such a huge responsibility.”
“You’re more than up for it. Don’t worry.”
“I’m not worried, I’m scared shitless”
“It’s just a small human being that has the tremendous power to wear you out. Nothing to be scared of” He jokes. “Besides if I can do it, a full-fledged citizen like you won’t have a problem”

They go to pick her up. While she finishes grabbing her stuff, Daniel and Miles, Brian and Sarah’s parents, introduce themselves and compliment Clementine’s good behavior.
Jack sees the piano and immediately reaches for it. “This is a beautiful piano”
“Do you play Jack?” Daniel asks.
“I used to. It’s been such a long time since I don’t play.”
“Would you like to try it?”
“Oh no! It’s ok, I don’t want to bother you.”
“Not at all, it’ll be my pleasure. Please.” He says offering the seat.
Jack sits in front of the piano, he moves his fingers stretching and contracting them. He exhales and twists his neck from one side to the other and presses the piano keys moving his body forward like he’s going to faint. He starts playing some jazz and Daniel looks at him spell bounded.
Meanwhile Miles offers Sawyer a drink and prepares one for Daniel and Jack. Sawyer listens to Jack for the first time and falls in love all over again. So talented he thinks.
“He’s a great pianist.” Miles comments.
“Looks like it” Sawyer says ashamed of not knowing this side of Jack.
Miles shifts uncomfortably but Sawyer is not looking at him.
“I probably shouldn’t tell you this, we’ve just met, our kids are friends and all but it’s what I do. Besides he’s being pretty insistent” says Miles and then pauses.
“Who?” Sawyer asks completely confused, now looking straight at Miles’ eyes.
“Your father, he says he’s sorry.”
Sawyer swallows his drink downright. “What the fuck are you talkin’ about?”
“I’m sorry man. It’s just… if I don’t tell you they don’t leave me alone. I’m sorry.” Miles explains feeling like crap.
“Who won’t leave you alone?” He says trying not to raise his voice, feeling sick all of the sudden.
“The dead”
“Are you tellin’ me you can speak with the dead?”
“Well, not speak exactly. I just listen what they have to say, if they have something to say. I know it sounds crazy…”
“Let me tell you somethin’ about crazy, I know crazy, ok? Don’t ask me how, but I lived with a bunch of crazy people for quite a long time, I know crazy. This is somethin’ else. This is just fucked up” Sawyer walks away from Miles, only a few steps. Jack goes on playing and Daniel keeps fixated at Jack.
Miles comes close to Sawyer, puts a hand over his shoulder and he exalts softly.
“How do I know this isn’t just some crap you came up with?” Sawyer asks.
“He says he is sorry for killing your mother, he really loved her but he was so mad he couldn’t see straight. He says he wasn’t looking for you to kill you but to say goodbye to you, and he’s really sorry for all things he did to you. He says he loves you and always did and that you shouldn’t keep calling yourself Sawyer that your mother gave you a name for something, James.”
Sawyer is crying tight-lipped and remains still. “What about my mum…” he manages to say “isn’t she there?”
“No, I can’t sense her. Maybe if you can give me something that belonged to her I can reach her somehow.”
“I have nothin’.” He says between whines.
“I’ll bring you another drink”, Miles goes and leaves him alone.
Clementine feels something is wrong with his dad and goes to him. She embraces one of his legs, and hugs it tightly.
Sawyer puts a hand over her head and caresses her hair gently, while thousands of thoughts and feelings come through his mind. All the anger and fear locked inside him for so many years, now is spread.
He picks her up and hugs her properly, “I love you baby girl.”
Daniel and Jack are now playing together. They seem to be enjoying it a lot.
Clementine falls asleep and Sawyer goes to Jack to tell him he’s going to put Clementine in the car.
They arrange to have dinner some other time and say goodbye.
Jack is thrilled and Sawyer exhausted, beaten. Sawyer pleads with his eyes for Jack to drive home.
