Maybe White wishes he were an artist (and wishes he were the Dubbo character) this is the reason for the elaborate and wordy descriptions of Dubbo's artwork.

Perhaps Patrick White has conceived these artistic masterpieces in his head and yet does not command the artistic skill necessaty to bring them to life - thus he has created the fictional Alf ( Read more... )

Possibly Oothoon and Theotormon are not really characters but rather symbols of everything which prevents us from finding salvation. The essay we wrote about Blake's poetry "singing in the heart" and providing "healing" would seem to suggest that yes, Blake was writing about salvation, but not a physcial salvation from the evils in the world as much as a salvation from the mind, from wasting one's intellect in facts facts facts and from wallowing away in the world around us... Dubbo is definitely I think a free spirit, just look at the extracts we've examined in class. His looking out the window when he wakes up, painting a picture in his mind's eye as a means of commenting on the world, thinking about the way the imperfections in the glass shape what he sees outside.

I was thinking that maybe the fact that the end of the novel has one of White's own creations sort of backflipping and thereafter admonishing their own creator could be symbolic of the learning experience both characters and author have undergone through the course of the novel.

People can indeed find the poetic genius in whatever it is which truly speaks to them...and that yes, in today's society (which is far more free and lenient) religion is one aspect of life through which many people DO escape reality to find that other sense we are so certain they are looking for.
